Liverpool secured a place in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after defeating Chelsea 6-5 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at Anfield on Wednesday night, October 28, 2026. Manchester City also advanced to the next round after overcoming Brighton and Hove Albion in a penalty shootout.
The encounter between Liverpool and Chelsea proved to be a closely contested affair, with both sides struggling to establish a decisive advantage during normal time. Chelsea took the lead in the 40th minute when Morgan Rogers converted a penalty after Ryan Gravenberch fouled Moises Caicedo inside the penalty area.
Liverpool responded almost immediately, drawing level three minutes later through Cody Gakpo, who converted from the spot after Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana handled the ball inside the box.
Both teams created opportunities to secure victory during the second half, but neither managed to score again before the final whistle. The match therefore proceeded to a penalty shootout to determine which side would advance.
Liverpool eventually prevailed 6-5 in the shootout. Goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili played an important role by saving Chelsea debutant Emmanuel Emegha’s effort, while Joe Gomez converted his penalty to put Liverpool in a strong position.
Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana subsequently sent his attempt over the crossbar, confirming Liverpool’s progression to the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, Manchester City booked their place in the last eight after defeating Brighton 4-3 on penalties following a 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium. City came from behind twice before goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli saved penalties from Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk to secure the victory.
The results kept Liverpool and Manchester City in contention for the Carabao Cup trophy, while Chelsea’s elimination brought their campaign in the competition to an end.
Liverpool will now look forward to the quarter-finals as they continue their pursuit of domestic silverware, while Chelsea must focus on their remaining competitions for the season.
