Golden Arrows assistant coach Ashley Makhanya has welcomed goalkeeper Thakasani Mbanjwa’s inclusion in Bafana Bafana’s preliminary squad, insisting that players should earn national team opportunities through their performances rather than the reputation of the clubs they represent.
Mbanjwa’s inclusion has attracted attention as South Africa prepares for its upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying fixtures against Kenya. The goalkeeper was named alongside Ricardo Goss, Ronwen Williams and Sipho Chaine in the preliminary goalkeeping group, highlighting the competition for places in the national setup.
Makhanya believes the recognition reflects the quality of players at Golden Arrows and demonstrates that consistent performances can open doors to international football.
The assistant coach expressed satisfaction with the call-up, explaining that players who perform well deserve opportunities to represent their country.
He also pointed to the recent inclusion of Van Neel in a previous Bafana Bafana preliminary squad, suggesting that Golden Arrows players are receiving recognition for their contributions on the pitch.
According to Makhanya, the continued selection of players from the club shows that national team opportunities should not be limited to footballers representing South Africa’s biggest teams.
He emphasised that technical ability, tactical discipline and consistent performances should remain important considerations for selectors.
Makhanya also challenged the perception that players must move to a traditionally dominant club to improve their international prospects. He believes footballers should be judged on their performances, regardless of the badge on their shirts.
For Mbanjwa, the preliminary selection represents an important opportunity to strengthen his case for further involvement with the national team. However, inclusion in a preliminary squad does not automatically guarantee a place in the final selection.
As Bafana Bafana prepare for their upcoming international commitments, the competition for places is expected to remain intense. Players across the Betway Premiership will be looking to impress through their performances and convince the national team technical staff that they deserve recognition.
