Sundowns Deal Huge Blow As Teboho Mokoena Is Stretchered Off

Sundowns Face Wiliete Test as Cardoso Demands Strong Response to Secure CAF Champions League Group Stage Spot

PRETORIA – Mamelodi Sundowns are preparing for a crucial CAF Champions League encounter against Angolan side Wiliete SC as they look to secure their place in the group stages of Africa’s premier club competition.

The Brazilians will welcome Wiliete to Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Friday, 23 October 2026, for the second leg of their second preliminary-round tie, knowing that victory is essential to keep their continental ambitions on track.

The two teams played to a goalless draw in the first leg in Angola on Sunday, 18 October, leaving the contest finely balanced ahead of the decisive return fixture. Neither side managed to find the breakthrough, meaning Sundowns must now make home advantage count.

Head coach Miguel Cardoso has called on his players to deliver a more aggressive and attacking performance after expressing disappointment with their inability to convert opportunities in the opening encounter.

The Portuguese tactician believes his team must show greater determination in the final third and demonstrate the quality expected of a club competing at the highest level of African football.

Cardoso acknowledged that Sundowns created opportunities in Angola but failed to capitalise on important moments. He also recognised the challenge posed by Wiliete, who have shown that they are capable of competing against established continental opponents.

The Angolan outfit cannot be underestimated, particularly after their disciplined performance in the first leg. Their physical approach and direct attacking play caused problems for the South African champions, forcing them to work hard for the draw.

Sundowns will therefore need to combine patience with attacking urgency when the teams meet again in Pretoria.

However, the Brazilians have reasons to remain confident. Playing in front of their home supporters gives them an opportunity to dictate the tempo, create more scoring chances and put Wiliete under sustained pressure.

There are also injury concerns surrounding midfielder Teboho Mokoena, who was stretchered off during the first leg after sustaining another knock to a previously injured ligament. Cardoso will be hoping the midfielder recovers in time, although the extent of the injury remains uncertain.

For Sundowns, qualification is about more than simply progressing to the next round. As the reigning African champions, they are determined to maintain their status among the continent’s leading clubs and continue their pursuit of another successful campaign.

Nevertheless, Wiliete will arrive with their own ambitions and will be determined to frustrate the hosts.

With the first leg ending 0-0, Sundowns know that a victory would secure qualification, while another draw that produces goals could put their campaign in danger under the applicable away-goals rule.

All eyes will now be on Loftus Versfeld as Masandawana prepare for a decisive night in their continental journey.
