Mngqithi’s Young Africans Make Huge CAF Champions League Statement With 4-0 Victory
South African coach Manqoba Mngqithi has guided Young Africans SC to an emphatic 4-0 victory over Madagascar’s CFFA, putting the Tanzanian giants in a commanding position in their CAF Champions League second preliminary-round tie.
Young Africans delivered an impressive performance on Saturday, 17 October 2026, scoring four unanswered goals to take a significant step towards qualification for the group stages of Africa’s premier club competition.
The result will provide a major boost for Mngqithi, who is determined to make his mark at the Tanzanian club after taking charge ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
Despite facing an opponent that initially proved difficult to break down, Young Africans eventually demonstrated their attacking quality, turning a competitive opening period into a convincing victory.
Cheikh Touré opened the scoring shortly before half-time, giving the Tanzanian side a crucial breakthrough after sustained pressure.
The goal changed the complexion of the encounter, allowing Young Africans to head into the interval with an advantage and return for the second half with greater confidence.
Albert Kangwanda doubled the lead shortly after the restart, making it increasingly difficult for CFFA to recover from the setback.
Young Africans continued to exploit the spaces available in their opponents’ defence, with Mudathir Yahya adding the third goal in the 54th minute.
Maxi Nzengeli then completed the scoring in the 59th minute, capping an impressive attacking display that left the Malagasy side facing a difficult task in the return fixture.
The fact that four different players found the back of the net will be particularly encouraging for Mngqithi, as it highlights the variety of attacking options available to his team.
The clean sheet was equally important, ensuring that Young Africans finished the first leg with a substantial advantage and no away goals conceded.
The victory also represents a timely response following the club’s 2-1 defeat against bitter rivals Simba SC in the Kariakoo Derby earlier this month.
For Mngqithi, the result offers an opportunity to build momentum and strengthen confidence within the squad as the continental campaign progresses.
Young Africans have established themselves as one of Tanzania’s leading clubs and will now be targeting another appearance in the Champions League group stages.
The return leg is scheduled for Wednesday, 21 October, at the Azam Complex in Dar es Salaam. Both fixtures are being staged at the same venue after CFFA arranged to host its home leg in Tanzania.
With a four-goal advantage, Young Africans are firmly in control of the tie. However, Mngqithi will expect his players to remain focused and avoid complacency when they return to action.
For the South African tactician, securing qualification would represent another important milestone in his attempt to establish Young Africans as a serious force in African football.
