SA Stars Abroad Enjoy Productive Weekend

South African footballers enjoyed a productive weekend abroad, with several players finding the net and contributing to important wins for their clubs. The standout performance came from Relebohile Mofokeng, who scored and provided an assist as Royale Union SG came from two goals down to thrash Cercle Brugge 5-2 in the Belgian Pro League on Sunday.

Mofokeng, the 22-year-old Bafana Bafana attacking midfielder who joined the Belgian side from Orlando Pirates earlier this year, played the full 90 minutes. He headed home in the 80th minute from a cross by Louis Patris to make it 4-2, then set up Kevin Rodriguez for the fifth goal deep in stoppage time. It was his fourth league goal of the season and earned him man-of-the-match honours. After the game, the former Pirates star spoke about his rare headed goal, saying that if the desire and mentality are there, the goal will come. Union SG moved into third place in the table after the impressive comeback victory at Stade Joseph Marien.

In Tanzania, Keletso Makgalwa continued his good form for Simba SC. The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Sekhukhune United striker scored in the 78th minute as Steve Barker’s side beat 15 de Agosto 3-0 in the second leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary round tie. The win sealed a 9-1 aggregate victory and booked Simba’s place in the group stages. Makgalwa has now scored three goals since joining the Tanzanian giants and is helping them challenge for honours both domestically and on the continent.

Over in England, Kgaogelo Chauke also got on the scoresheet. The midfielder, who plays for League One club Burton Albion, equalised in the 56th minute during their 2-1 home win over Leyton Orient on Saturday. It was his second goal of the season and helped the Brewers climb the table. Chauke, a South African youth international who has become a key player for Burton, recently celebrated reaching 100 appearances for the club.

These results show that several South African players are making a positive impact in different leagues across Europe and Africa. Fans back home will be hoping the good form continues in the weeks ahead.
