Football analyst Nadim Lukhele has sparked controversy after questioning the circumstances surrounding the reported injuries of Mamelodi Sundowns players Teboho Mokoena and Aubrey Modiba ahead of the MTN8 final against Orlando Pirates.
Lukhele raised concerns about the players' fitness and availability while questioning Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane over claims that Sundowns may have benefited from the management of the national team players before the highly anticipated cup final.
The analyst reportedly questioned whether Mokoena and Modiba had received additional rest ahead of the domestic showdown because they did not feature in Bafana Bafana's matches during the international break. His remarks raised questions about the relationship between national team responsibilities, player fitness and the interests of individual clubs.
The debate intensified following Sundowns' 2-0 victory over Orlando Pirates at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday night, a result that secured the Tshwane giants the MTN8 trophy.
Mokoena played an important role in the final, scoring the opening goal to put Sundowns in control of the contest. The midfielder's contribution subsequently became a talking point in light of the earlier concerns about his reported injury and availability for the match.
Sundowns maintained their advantage as Pirates attempted to fight their way back into the contest. However, the Buccaneers were unable to find an equaliser before Iqraam Rayners converted a penalty in stoppage time to seal the victory.
Lukhele's comments have generated debate among football followers, particularly regarding whether players' fitness situations should be scrutinised more closely when major domestic finals coincide with international football commitments.
However, the allegations do not establish that Mosimane deliberately favoured Sundowns or that either player's injury was misrepresented. No evidence confirming wrongdoing has been presented in the report, and neither Mosimane nor the South African Football Association was cited as having responded to the claims.
The controversy has added another talking point to the aftermath of the MTN8 final, with Sundowns celebrating their triumph while Pirates were left disappointed after missing out on the trophy.
