4/10 man struggles in Sheffield United player ratings v Charlton Athletic after huge Femi Seriki injury blow

Sheffield United player ratings v Charlton Athletic as huge Femi Seriki injury blow overshadows result

Sheffield United surrendered their unbeaten record going into the international break with defeat at Charlton Athletic - with their frustration compounded by a real injury concern over Femi Seriki.

The right-back, who’s only just returned from a knee issue, came on at the break but made way minutes into the second half after falling awkwardly.

He was stretchered off, to a mixture of applause and boos from the Charlton supporters, with the hope that he has not suffered any real damage.

United had fought back from behind at Preston North End in midweek and saw their opponents seize the momentum again here, with Millenic Alli finding a way past Michael Cooper with a finish at the United ‘keeper’s near post.

But they got back on level terms when Jordan Ayew nodded home his first goal in United colours, after Will Mannion had only half-cleared Kalvin Phillips’ free-kick under pressure from a crowd of bodies.

They couldn’t see out the game, though, with Matty Godden coming off the bench to volley home the winner from close range. Here’s how we rated United’s players at The Valley...

Whether he was unsighted or caught out by the bounce only he will know but he surely won't have been happy with getting beaten at his near post from long range for Charlton's opener, although he will rightly suggest that Alli should have been closed down long before he found the bottom corner. After that he barely had a notable save to make before being beaten again by Godden's close range finish

Decent defending prevented Kelman testing Cooper not long before Alli's shot beat him, before he was booked after getting an aerial challenge slightly wrong. That, and the fact he was up against the lively Campbell, may have played a part in the half-time decision to replace him, with Seriki on at the break - before he made way himself

Finished the game as United's third right-back after Choudhury was replaced by Seriki, who then made way moments into the second half. That placed him directly in the path of the lively Campbell but he dealt with the threat well. He'd brought the Charlton man down earlier to spark penalty appeals from the home fans but he'd also won a lot of the ball as well and it would have been a travesty if he was punished

Back in the side after suspension and United looked more composed as a result, even if there will be questions asked about their defending for both of Charlton's goals. The centre-half also had a decent sight of goal soon after Ayew made it 1-1 when Mannion came to claim a corner and got caught in a crowd, but Kitching's header was tame and the Charlton' keeper recovered to claim before it bobbled closer to his goal-line. But then he was caught ball-watching as Godden scored the winner for the home side from a couple of yards out, as Kitching hesitated

He may be better going forward than he is defensively but surely he has to do better for both of Charlton's goals? For the first he didn't put nearly enough pressure on Alli as he shifted the ball so easily and smashed past Cooper at the near post to put the home side ahead, with Phillips also in attendance. And for the second Alli seemed to skip past him rather easily before crossing to Godden, who volleyed home from close range under little by the way of a challenge

Another welcome returnee to the United side after injury and was heavily involved in United's attacking play, dropping deep to get things moving and keeping things simple. He had a big hand in the equaliser as he put a free-kick into a dangerous position and Mannion could only clear as far as scorer Ayew, and tried to catch out the 'keeper from a free-kick at his near post late in the game but Mannion read it and saved. Made way soon after for Arblaster

Came into the game in his native London on the back of his remarkable hat-trick at Preston in midweek and didn't find things as comfortable this time around. He wasn't bad by any stretch of the imagination but it was a scrappy game for the most part in which no-one really shone, although he nearly rescued a point in the last minute with a first-time effort with Mannion saved well down to his left to earn his side the win

His afternoon didn't start brilliantly when he cut onto his favoured left foot and ballooned a cross miles over the heads of everyone in the middle, and it didn't improve dramatically from there. There were some decent moments down the right but he cut a frustrated figure at times, especially when he was wiped out by Rankin-Costello on the touchline around the hour mark with a really poor challenge. Fired a shot at Mannion late on which he fumbled before saving at the second attempt

Once again looked like one of United's biggest threats down the left and there was some real concern just before the break when he went own with some sort of fitness issue and took an age to get off the pitch after the whistle had gone. But he was fit enough to continue after the break and showed some more promising moments to excite those Unitedites behind the goal he was attacking in the second half. He won the free-kick from which United got back on level terms with another lovely bit of trickery to bamboozle his marker but didn't have as much impact in the second half

Once again lined up more centrally with Bamford still out and had a couple of good sights of goal that he couldn't take advantage of. On the first occasion his touch let him down from Burrows' neat pass and the chance went begging and he couldn't make the most of the other one either. Made way late on for Campbell

Forced an early save from Mannion with the first real chance of the game as the ball fell to him in the Charlton box, and if he had his time again I'm sure he'd feel like he could have directed it away from the home 'keeper rather than straight at him. But he soon made amends with a reaction header to level the scores after Mannion could only clear Phillips' free kick as far as the United No.10. It was a good reward for a workmanlike display leading the line where he chased every ball and he got a deserved reception when he made way for Cannon

Came on for Choudhury at the break and a couple of minutes later was leaving the pitch on a stretcher after landing awkwardly. The early signs didn't look good and hopefully it's not as bad as it seemed

Slotted in alongside Kitching at centre-half after Tanganga went to right back and was solid enough, before finishing the game up top.
