Luton Town – A Win Is A Win

Back on track?

Or is it just another false dawn?

Last night, at Kenilworth Road, after the poor performance away to the MK Dons last Saturday, a game they lost 2-1, the Hatters got back to winning ways against Barnsley.

Although the three points earned are most welcome and have lifted Luton Town to 13th place in the table, four points off of a promotion play-off place, the fare served up still left a lot to be desired, especially against a Barnsley side who have struggled all season, winning just two out of the ten EFL League One games they have played.

Aside from the victory, perhaps he biggest surprise of the night was that Jack Wilshere selected the same starting XI that produced the poor performance at the Stadium MK, while also selecting the same group of substitutes.

After, previously, bemoaning the fact our set pieces had, for most of the season, been unproductive, it was a case of eating a slice of humble pie when, as early as the second minute, Mads Andersen rose above the Barnsley defence to power home a header from a Jamie Donley free-kick.

Another case of a player scoring against a former club.

But the indications were there that it was not going to be an easy night for the Hatters with some enterprising play seeing the visitors create several good chances.

If only they had a decent striker!

Heading towards half-time, Luton Town doubled their lead when Nahki Wells, lurking at the far post, was on hand to head home from a George Johnston assist.

Leading 2-0 at the break, the inclination was there for the Hatters to extend their lead, in the second half. but it was not to be the case.

Indeed, it was to be Barnsley that struck with Kirk scoring the goal of the game rattling home a fierce shot, from a narrow angle, that beat James Shea all ends up.

The last few minutes saw Barnsley believing they should have been awarded a penalty when Amani Richards crashed to the deck, only to receive a yellow card for stimulation, an act that, when the final whistle sounded, promoted a shoving match between both camps in the dug-out area.

Three points earned but I get the impression Luton Town will need to further raise their game when they welcome Leicester City, to Kenilworth Road, on Saturday.
