Blackburn Rovers' 'hybrid' football that's key to good form

Rovers have deviated from their possession-based style in the last two games, both of which they have won.

It shows that Mowbray's side, whilst still having a preferred identity, are able to play 'hybrid' football to suit the opposition.

"'I'm pretty clear what I want to do but we have options of how we can play and the players we can use," Mowbray explained.

"I think again they'll have a lot of the ball but Cardiff had a lot of the ball and we found a way to beat them. Obviously Bristol had a lot of the ball and we found a way to beat them.

"There's almost a new stat out there in the football world that the team with the ball doesn't generally win. A lot of teams are winning more games without the ball than with the ball and that's a trend in football.

"I think for us I would like to be a bit of a hybrid of that and some days to dominate and cut through teams and other days to be solid without the ball and play a transitional counter-attacking game.

"I think it's good for the players to learn our ways, to have different options and know which one we're going to choose on any given game day."

Rovers' growing strength on the bench has been a key part of that flexibility. With players like as Jayden Fevrier, Augustus Kargbo and Mathias Jorgensen who can all stretch the pitch, it gives Mowbray more options.

"The evidence is there the other night when you're making substitutes," he said.

"It's positive that we've got some experienced players to bring on and help the team get the result that we did on Tuesday night.

"The Cardiff game, it got difficult when they scored the early second half and yet we dug in and we got through the game and got the points.

"If anything, it's going to give me problems moving forward of who we're going to leave out of the 20-man squad on the matchday but that's part of football.

"I'd much rather have that difficulty than wondering about how many subs I can actually make."
