Ilja Dragunov has shared his thoughts on Gunther’s WWE booking. He believes the former World Heavyweight Champion deserves better treatment. Dragunov also praised Gunther’s abilities and their long friendship.

In July 2025, Gunther retired Goldberg from wrestling. A few months later, he faced John Cena. The match marked Cena’s final appearance before retirement. In December, Gunther forced Cena to submit, retiring the legendary star. Gunther later retired AJ Styles from professional wrestling.

However, his booking has since taken a different direction. He is now involved in a storyline with Danhausen and Finn Bálor.

Speaking to Ariel Helwani on The Ariel Helwani Show, Ilja Dragunov discussed Gunther’s current WWE booking. He said, “I guess my feeling is the same feeling that a lot of other people share. If you are the person to retire John Cena, it’s a status that you should keep a certain level of that. For me, he is one of the best and he will be one of the best of all time.”

The two stars share a close friendship and history. Dragunov explained why Gunther should maintain his status. “He is a dear friend of mine since 2014-15. I know he’s good. I know he will always do good, and whatever he does is going to be awesome.
