The astonishing stat that you have been hearing about in the press regarding Rangers and Hibernian is sadly entirely true. We have to go back to 1979 for the last time Rangers actually beat Hibs in a cup match at Hampden.
If we were to be pedantic, of course, Rangers briefly had to play home games at Hampden during season 2024/25. Rangers nearly faced and beat Hibs there. However, the maiden fixture back at Ibrox of that season was ironically against Hibs, and Rangers won that one 1–0.
But over the course of the past five decades, the stat is that Rangers have never beaten Hibernian at Scotland’s national stadium in the cup.
There have been four meetings between the two at that level and at that venue since 1979. That was the last time Rangers secured a cup victory against the Leith side in Mount Florida.
Of course, four occasions is not exactly a ton over the course of five decades. But it is still history weighted very much in Hibs’ direction.
We all remember the most recent Scottish cup final between the two, which Hibs came out on top in. That ‘exuberant’ afternoon. That was the last meeting between the two at Hampden. And, of course, it didn’t work out so well for Rangers.
Derek McInnes’ track record in finals is not great, as we discuss in an upcoming article. He has secured four finals in his career and won just one.
However, these were with sides not necessarily expected to have a huge haul of silverware. His record for getting to finals in his career is pretty good.
This is now his fifth, but this is with a club that is expected to win.
Hibernian will not be easy. They might not be super strong in the league this season. But when it comes to a one off cup match, especially a final, all bets are off.
As we’ve mentioned, Rangers lost the last one at Hampden to this side.
Those were the days when the lower league rivalry was becoming a seriously big soap opera. Rangers and Hibs had become major Championship rivals, and a lot of toxicity existed between the two teams. Think Scott Allan.
That might not be as intense today in the Premiership, with Rangers considerably better now than Hibs. But the embers of that old rivalry are still there.
Rangers will have to be on their game to overcome a team with this much desire to win the League Cup.
But five decades of history weighted against Derek McInnes’ side is a poor omen to go into this final with.
It shows that even in the old days, when things were a little better down Govan way, Rangers weren’t guaranteed trophies. Even against teams deemed much weaker, victory was never assured.
We will see in due course how McInnes manages in this particular final.
