U18s report: Arsenal 3-0 Sunderland

Our young Gunners secured their place in the U18 Premier League Cup knockout stages with a 1-0 victory over Sunderland, finishing top of Group B.

Despite creating plenty of chances in the first half, the floodgates opened after the break, with Mylo Bernard, Emerson Nwaneri and Callan Hamill each finding the target to seal our spot in the quarter-finals.

FIRST HALF

Our attacking trio looked hungry from the off, with Vincent Joseph and Nwaneri going close, before Luis Munoz was denied what looked like a clear penalty after being swiped to the ground.

Hakeem Abubakar threatened next, meeting Owusu-Gyasi's inswinging corner at the back post, but Finlay Robertson in net caught his redirected header.

Pushing for an opener, Owusu-Gyasi continued to deliver down the right, picking out Munoz with a precise ball after neat build-up play, but our forward's effort was blocked at the last moment.

We had further penalty appeals dismissed after a Sunderland defender appeared to handle the ball, with our claims not given despite the linesman having a clear view of the incident.

The visitors came close to breaking the deadlock before the interval, when Caleb Shakespeare wriggled free on the edge of the area and smashed a strike off the crossbar.

SECOND HALF

The Wearside outfit forced Jack Talbot into a big save after half-time, as captain Matthew Burns broke free of our defence and fired across goal, but our no. 1 timed his dive to perfection.

Our persistence finally paid off on the hour mark, when Mikael Bonaventure Yetna seized on a loose ball and threaded a pass through to Bernard, who shifted onto his right foot before firing into the top-right corner.

Our penalty shouts were finally answered when Burns brought down substitute Axel Donczew, with the Sunderland skipper shown a red card. Nwaneri made no mistake from 12 yards, giving us a vital two-goal cushion heading into the closing stages.

Our academy side had one final flourish, adding a third in stoppage time as late substitutes Gabriel Arteta and Callan Hamill combined from a corner, with the latter sealing our eighth consecutive win in all competitions.

WHAT IT MEANS

We have topped our group and booked our place in the knockout stages for the first time since 2023/24. Details of our quarter-final tie will follow soon.

WHAT'S NEXT

Our young Gunners will return to U18 Premier League South action after the international break, with a trip to Chelsea on Saturday, November 21.

Kick-off at Cobham Training Centre is scheduled for 11am (UK time).
