When Leeds United completed the summer capture of James Trafford from Manchester City in a deal worth £45million, the move was seen as a bold investment in one of England’s brightest young goalkeeping talents.

Eight matches into the Premier League campaign, that decision is looking like an absolute masterstroke for Daniel Farke’s side – and a source of growing debate in the North West.

Trafford was the standout performer during Leeds United’s 0-0 draw against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Sunday (25 October), producing four vital saves, including a crucial early one-on-one stop to deny Brian Brobbey, in swirling conditions brought on by Storm Austen. His commanding display earned him Leeds’ official Player of the Match award with 51% of the supporter vote.

However, the 24-year-old’s Wearside heroics are merely the latest chapter in what has been an extraordinary statistical start to the season.

Newly emerged data across Europe’s top five leagues reveal that Trafford’s efficiency between the posts places him in elite company across the continent.

Goalkeeper Club & League Saves Shots Faced Save % Goals Conceded
Christos Mandas Lazio (Serie A) 30 35 85.7% 5
Loris Karius Schalke 04 (Bundesliga) 35 42 83.3% 7
James Trafford Leeds United (Premier League) 28 36 83.3% 6
Berke Özer Lille (Ligue 1) 24 29 82.8% 5
Gianluigi Donnarumma Manchester City (Premier League) 21 30 70.0% 9

James Trafford joint-second among goalkeepers in top 5 European leagues in save percentage table

According to FBRef statistics covering the 2026-27 big five European leagues, Trafford boasts an 83.3% save percentage, placing him joint-second alongside Schalke’s Loris Karius and behind only Lazio’s Christos Mandas.

Out of 36 shots on target faced across his eight Premier League appearances, the England international has repelled 28, conceding just six goals and keeping three clean sheets.

To be sure, statistical context matters: goalkeepers playing for comparatively weaker or transition-heavy sides naturally face a higher volume of shots, which can occasionally tip percentage metrics in their favour when compared to stoppers at possession-dominant clubs like Manchester City.

However, that caveat takes absolutely nothing away from Trafford’s immense transformative influence at Elland Road.

Underlying metrics courtesy of FotMob show Trafford has already prevented 1.96 goals in the Premier League this season – almost two full goals saved above expectation. With Leeds United having drawn five of their opening eight fixtures and securing a victory by a single-goal margin, those two prevented goals represent an irreplaceable point swing.

Had those two goals gone in, Farke‘s side would be stripped of two to three crucial points, potentially tumbling from 7th place in the Premier League table down toward 13th or 15th position.

Manchester City fans regret selling him to Leeds United

The numerical comparison becomes even more striking when measured against the man who occupies the gloves at his former club.

While Manchester City opted to cash in on Trafford during the summer transfer window, placing their faith in Gianluigi Donnarumma, the Italian international has endured a rockier start to the season. Donnarumma currently holds a 70.0% save percentage, having conceded nine goals from 30 shots on target faced.

Furthermore, while Trafford was frustrating Sunderland on Sunday, Donnarumma committed a costly error 24 hours earlier – allowing a Nicolas Jackson effort to squirm beneath him in City’s 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa. The divergence in weekend fortunes did not go unnoticed by the Etihad faithful.

Following Trafford’s post-match Instagram upload celebrating his Sunderland performance and clean sheet, Manchester City supporters flooded the comments section expressing early transfer remorse:

  • “Please come back to Man City, we need you”, wrote one supporter.
  • “Super goalkeeper, come back to City”, added another.
  • “Better than Donnarumma”, stated a third user, directly comparing the two stoppers.

While eight matches represent a snapshot in a long campaign, Trafford’s early metrics provide undeniable proof of his elite potential. For Leeds United, securing a goalkeeper capable of single-handedly altering league standings represents a major triumph. For Manchester City, Trafford’s ascent ensures their transfer calls will remain under intense public scrutiny.
