Morocco and Algeria maintained their perfect records at the U15 World Cup, while DR Congo suffered a third defeat in as many matches.
Morocco strengthened their position at the top of Group F with two convincing wins in Hovsan, Azerbaijan, on Sunday. The Atlas Cubs defeated Costa Rica 4-2 before beating Belize 6-0, with Said Noufii and Adam Mimouni scoring twice each across the two games.
Those results followed Morocco’s 2-0 victory over the Philippines in their opening match. Karim Meftal’s side are the only team leading Group F and will next face Curacao and Liberia.
Algeria also made it three wins from three. After beginning the tournament with a 1-0 success against Argentina, the Fennecs recorded back-to-back five-goal victories, beating Suriname 5-0 and Taiwan 5-0 on Sunday.
Abdelkarim Meharzi was the key figure in both matches. He scored twice against Suriname and added four goals against Taiwan, having also netted Algeria’s only goal in their opening game.
The forward has now scored seven times in the tournament, accounting for nearly two-thirds of Algeria’s goals. His form has helped the team lead Group B on goal difference ahead of Malawi.
Malawi will be Algeria’s penultimate opponent in the group stage, before the Fennecs complete the first round against Oman.
DR Congo, meanwhile, are still searching for their first points. The Leopardeaux had already lost to Tunisia 3-1 and Brazil 3-0 before being beaten 3-2 by El Salvador on Saturday.
They will face Guinea-Bissau and Nepal in their remaining group matches.
Tunisia responded to their earlier win against DR Congo by defeating Guinea-Bissau 6-4 in another high-scoring fixture.
Burkina Faso endured two defeats, losing 2-1 to New Caledonia before a 3-0 reverse against Lebanon. Togo were beaten 5-0 by Czech Republic, but recovered by defeating United States Virgin Islands 6-0.
Congo also lost both of their matches, going down 4-2 to Spain and 3-0 to Brazil.
