Yahaya’s late strike sinks Liberia as Black Challenge eye World Cup glory

Ghana’s national amputee football team, the Black Challenge, recorded a narrow 1-0 victory over their Liberian counterparts in an international warm-up friendly played at the McDan La Town Park in Accra on Wednesday, November 4, 2026.

The friendly served as an important preparatory exercise for both countries ahead of the 2026 Amputee Football World Cup, scheduled to take place in San Juan de los Lagos, Mexico, from November 13 to 22, 2026. Both nations have secured qualification for the tournament.

The encounter began at a lively pace, with both sides displaying attacking intent. However, Liberia appeared to have the upper hand in the opening stages, as their captain, Morelia Boakai, orchestrated proceedings from midfield and dictated the tempo of the game.

Despite the visitors’ early dominance, Ghana’s goalkeeper, Atsu Abor, and his defensive colleagues remained resolute, frustrating Liberia’s attacking advances to ensure that the first half ended goalless.

Ghana’s coach, Stephen Richard Obeng, introduced Yusif Yahaya and Isaac Eshun after the break, replacing Richard Opentil and Sarfo Larbi respectively. The substitutions injected fresh energy into the home side and significantly changed the complexion of the game in Ghana’s favour.

The Black Challenge subsequently took greater control, launching a series of attacking moves and creating several scoring opportunities. However, Liberia’s goalkeeper, Frances Fallah, proved difficult to beat, producing a string of impressive saves to deny the hosts on numerous occasions.

With the match seemingly heading towards a goalless draw, Ghana’s dangerman, Yusif Yahaya, rose to the occasion, finding the back of the net late in the encounter to score what proved to be the decisive goal.

Liberia made a late attempt to salvage a draw, with captain Morelia Boakai unleashing a free kick, but Ghana’s goalkeeper and defence stood firm to preserve their slender advantage.

The final whistle confirmed a hard-fought 1-0 victory for the Black Challenge, providing the Ghanaian side with a timely morale boost as preparations intensify for the World Cup in Mexico. The encounter also offered both technical teams an opportunity to assess their players, identify areas requiring improvement and fine-tune their strategies ahead of the global competition.
