Ian Wright says Leeds United have a really rare player that he finds ‘brilliant to watch’

With just one game to go until the November international break, Leeds United are under enormous pressure to get back to winning ways – but Ian Wright knows one man who can.

Leeds have gone five games without a win in the Premier League. Recent memories of fans singing “grab your passport” for Daniel Farke’s European party are all but over, even if Leeds do remain in 12th place.

An initial eight points from four games has come to an abrupt halt, with fans receiving a stark reality check. They are looking over their shoulder rather than at who is above, with Tottenham coming up next.

Ian Wright: Dominic Calvert-Lewin is rare in football these days

Two goals in five games, Leeds are struggling to find their early-season form. Supporters believe that Farke has been so hyper-focused on being hard to beat that their attacking prowess has dipped.

With five goals in 11 games this season, Calvert-Lewin is the man Leeds must turn to. He came within an inch of opening the scoring last Saturday, and Ian Wright believes that he is a rarity in the modern game.

On Stick To Football, Wright said that it is great to watch Calvert-Lewin because he is a throwback to the old-fashioned striker so rarely seen in football today: “I watched Dominic Calvert-Lewin against Arsenal.

“It was a fantastic display of a number nine and getting the ball against two really robust defenders. It was brilliant to watch because you don’t see it anymore,” Wright explained, on England striker Calvert-Lewin.

Is Calvert-Lewin scoring as many goals as he should be?

Calvert-Lewin will feel unlucky that Djordje Petrovic’s save ricocheted off the top of his arm and bobbled into the net. But the truth of the matter is, he should have scored with the initial contact to put go 1-0 up.

It’s not the first chance he’s missed. According to the stats, Calvert-Lewin is performing right where he should be. The England star has four Premier League goals, from a Premier League XG of 4.03 so far.

Calvert-Lewin is lucky that the Premier League goals panel awarded his header against Newcastle to him, even if it might have brushed Jayden Bogle on the way past. A goal against Spurs would go down nicely.
