Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, will face Mexico in the Round of 16 of the ongoing 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
The Nigerian side will meet Mexico on Thursday, October 29, in Salé, with both teams fighting for a place in the quarter-finals of the competition.
Mexico booked their place in the knockout stage after finishing second in Group F.
The North American side secured qualification following a 1-0 victory over Australia in their final group match on Sunday.
Citlalli Reyes scored the decisive goal to give Mexico all three points and confirm their progress to the Round of 16.
Mexico, who won the bronze medal at the 2025 edition of the tournament, will now turn their attention to the challenge posed by Nigeria as they seek to advance further in the competition.
The Flamingos also finished second in their group, Group B, behind defending champions North Korea.
Nigeria will need to put up a strong performance against Mexico to keep their hopes of progressing to the latter stages of the tournament alive.
The Round of 16 encounter is expected to be an important test for the Nigerian team, who will be looking to make the most of their opportunity in the knockout stage.
Unlike the group phase, where teams have several matches to secure qualification, the knockout stage leaves little room for mistakes. A defeat would end a team’s campaign, while victory would take the winner into the quarter-finals.
Coach Akeem Busari and his players will therefore need to prepare carefully for the encounter, with defensive discipline and effective use of scoring opportunities likely to be important.
Mexico will also be keen to maintain the momentum gained from their victory over Australia. However, the Flamingos will hope to overcome the challenge and continue their journey in the tournament.
The match will take place in Salé, Morocco, on Thursday, October 29, as Nigeria and Mexico battle for one of the quarter-final places at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
