Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor has admitted his side still have work to do despite extending their perfect start to the SportPesa League season with a narrow 1-0 victory over Kakamega Homeboyz.
David Okoth scored the decisive goal in the 69th minute at Bukhungu Stadium on Wednesday, securing a fourth consecutive win for the defending champions and taking their tally to 12 points from four matches.
Akonnor acknowledged the difficulty of the encounter, admitting Homeboyz provided a stern examination of his team's title credentials.
“We knew this would be a difficult match because Homeboyz are a good side, especially when playing at home,” the Ghanaian tactician said.
Gor Mahia struggled to create clear chances against the hosts, who defended resolutely and threatened after the break. Akonnor said his players needed to improve their ball movement and exploit the available space on the flanks.
“We needed to move the ball quicker and use the spaces on the wings. The players worked hard, but we had to make a few changes to get the result,” he added.
The coach introduced three substitutes in the 59th minute, with the changes eventually paying off when Okoth unleashed a powerful effort past goalkeeper Farouk Wanzala.
Akonnor praised the impact of his replacements but stressed that the victory should not overshadow the areas requiring improvement.
“When you make changes, you expect the players coming in to make a difference. They did their job, and David scored a very good goal,” he said.
“These are the kind of matches that test you. We are happy with the three points, but there is still a lot of work to do.”
Gor Mahia will now look to maintain their winning momentum as they continue their title defence.
