Algeria and Ivory Coast lead African charge as Senegal hit seven at Under-15 World Cup

The second round of Under-15 World Cup matches in Azerbaijan produced another strong showing from Africa on Sunday, with Algeria and Cote d’Ivoire maintaining their perfect records and Senegal recovering emphatically from their opening defeat.

The matches were played at the Hovsan Sports Complex in Baku, where several African teams continued to impress after the tournament’s opening day. Cote d’Ivoire have already scored 11 goals without conceding in their first two games.

Algeria followed their 1-0 victory over Argentina by beating Suriname 5-0. Abdelkarim Meharzi scored twice, including a ninth-minute opener and an 18th-minute penalty, while Mohamed Laieb, Youcef Anteur and Ayoub Zoubidi also found the net in the 14th, 23rd and 40th minutes respectively.

The result means the young Fennecs have won both of their matches without conceding a goal.

Cote d’Ivoire were equally dominant, defeating the Turks and Caicos Islands 6-0 after Saturday’s 5-0 win against Rwanda. Cheick Berte scored twice in the opening six minutes, before Dramane Diarrassouba completed a hat-trick with goals in the 25th, 28th and 33rd minutes.

Jadon Montilus added to the Ivorian total with an own goal in the 31st minute.

Senegal responded to their 3-0 loss to Cameroon by overwhelming Grenada 7-1. Abdoulaye Diallo struck three times in the fifth, 13th and 24th minutes, while Georges Kanfom and Khadre Diop also scored. Two own goals from Amahn Youssi completed the victory for the Lionceaux.

Cameroon could not build on their opening win over Senegal, losing 2-1 to India. Ndam Moctar put the team ahead in the 20th minute, but an own goal by Fareil Ngobo and a strike from Lalremruatfela turned the match around for India.

Guinea recorded one of the biggest victories of the tournament, beating American Samoa 17-0 after their 2-1 success against Canada on Saturday. Seydouba Camara scored five goals, Nfamady Diabate netted six and Naby Sylla added a hat-trick.

Mali also made it two wins from two by defeating Belarus 2-1. Oumar Wague scored in the 29th minute and Sidy Haidara added another six minutes later, following Mali’s 7-1 victory over Botswana.

Elsewhere, Benin beat the Cook Islands 10-0, Madagascar edged New Zealand 4-3, Ghana defeated Myanmar 7-1, Cape Verde beat Tonga 7-0 and Angola won 3-1 against the Solomon Islands.

Niger overcame Malta 1-0, while Gabon suffered a heavy 9-1 defeat by Latvia and Togo lost 5-0 to the Czech Republic.

Several teams, including DR Congo, were still due to play their second matches later in the day.
