Michael Carrick's Manchester United tenure is once again hanging by a thread despite the 20-time champions rescuing a draw in dramatic fashion against Aston Villa. It's still one win in 10 Premier League matches for United, but it's another result that poses more questions than answers.
As far as starts go, United literally haven't ever had a worse one in the Premier League era. Goals from Alysson and Nicolas Jackson saw the visitors race to a two-goal advantage - the fastest United have ever been 2-0 down in Premier League history. The chant from the home fans went to the tune of 'you're not fit to wear the shirt', but not even the most optimistic of United supporters would've predicted what came next.
Matheus Cunha's stretching run forced Boubacar Kamara into a late tackle, with Bruno Fernandes converting the subsequent penalty kick. And before the half-time whistle was blown, parity had been restored, this time Youri Tielemans netting the leveller against his old side.
It felt like history was repeating itself after United's comeback vs Roma on Wednesday, when they came from two goals down to go on and win. History did repeat itself, but in the sense that Villa scored twice in quick succession to restore their two-goal cushion. Diogo Dalot's clumsy attempt at a clearance gifted Villa a penalty, which John McGinn tucked home. While Leon Goretzka was on hand to tap into an empty net after a calamitous error from Leny Yoro.
Just when the match looked like it was heading towards a Villa win, United once again rallied. Joshua Zirkzee made it 4-3, with Patrick Dorgu heading home to rescue a late point in the dying embers of the match. Here, Express Sport hand out player ratings on the back of an eight-goal thriller...
Senne Lammens - 2
Disastrous for the two opening Villa goals, which is the last thing he needed after a shocker against Chelsea. Let the opener slip through his legs, while the Belgian's parried effort fell into Alysson's path for the second. Couldn't do much for the third and fourth goals, but by then the damage was already done.
Picked up an assist, apparently, but wasn't up to much otherwise.
Harry Maguire - 6
Taken off at half-time, presumably with an injury. Was solid enough during his 45-minute cameo and it's no surprise United's defence really did fall apart after his departure.
Leny Yoro - 2
Has been at the scene of the crime in United's previous two home matches in the Premier League. There's no denying the youngster's talent, but the mistakes creeping into his game have to be a concern for whoever is in charge at United.
Diogo Dalot - 1
Like a fish out of water. In fact, a fish playing left-back probably adds more defensive security than the Portuguese international right now. All over the place for the penalty he gave away, and was booed off the pitch after being subbed in the second half. There's a case that his 1/10 rating is a touch generous.
Youri Tielemans - 4
Took his goal well, but might've been watching his former team-mates and asking why he chose to ditch the West Midlands outfit. It's becoming increasingly clear that he isn't compatible in a midfield with Fernandes.
Kobbie Mainoo - 3
For everything the young Englishman gives you, he isn't a midfielder that covers acres of space and breaks up opposition attacks. Far too often the academy product was asked to do too much on his own, as partner Tielemans had gone wandering. Even still, when he did have the chance to impact the match, his efforts left a lot to be desired.
Bruno Fernandes - 4
More bothered about picking fights with the referee than putting the team on his back and dragging them to victories. He did score, as well as putting the ball in for the Dorgu header, but the body language stinks at times. He carries himself with the air of someone who believes he's better than his team-mates, which, to be fair, he probably isn't wrong.
Matheus Cunha - 5
Responsible for the comeback in mid-week and kick-started this one with his run that led to the penalty. The contact might've been minimal, but he drew the foul and was positive in his play thereafter. Came close to snatching a goal in the second half, forcing a good save from Zion Suzuki.
Bryan Mbeumo - 4
Was incredibly lucky not to have been called offside for the Tielemans goal, as the Villa defender didn't react quick enough. Was too much of a passenger when United needed something to happen.
Amad - 5
Not horrendous, but by no means great. Had a deflected effort that flashed just wide in the first half and was replaced by Shea Lacey after United fell 4-2 behind.
Ayden Heaven - 5
Not good enough and a huge downgrade from Harry Maguire.
Mason Mount - 4
Heavy touches and misplaced passes. It wasn't a cameo to be proud of.
Shea Lacey - 6
Should've been introduced earlier. Isn't afraid to take on a man and gave the Villa fullback something to think about.
The unlikely hero. Couldn't miss given the quality of the cross, but before that didn't do too much of note.
Joshua Zirkzee - 7
Probably questioning why he hasn't been given more opportunities from the off. For his lack of quality in some areas, the Dutchman does give it everything when on the pitch and clearly has a sense for goal.
