According to a report by Madrid Universal on Monday, November 2, 2026, Real Madrid have received a major boost after Federico Valverde returned to first-team training ahead of their Champions League clash with AEK Athens.
The midfielder missed Sunday's 3-0 victory over Racing Santander after experiencing discomfort during the Clasico against Barcelona. His return gives Jose Mourinho another important option as Real Madrid prepare for a busy run of fixtures.
Valverde first felt discomfort during the opening half of Madrid's victory over Barcelona before eventually leaving the pitch in the second period. Although medical examinations ruled out a serious injury, the Uruguayan was unable to resume normal training with his teammates before the Racing Santander match.
There was initially hope that the midfielder would recover in time for Sunday's fixture. However, Mourinho and his coaching staff decided against taking unnecessary risks with their captain. His absence was notable because of his importance to the midfield, although Madrid still produced an impressive performance to claim all three points.
His return to group training is encouraging news ahead of Wednesday's European assignment. However, taking part in a full team session does not automatically mean he will return to the starting lineup.
Real Madrid are scheduled to face AEK Athens in the Champions League on November 4, and having Valverde available would give Mourinho more options when selecting his team. Nevertheless, the manager could decide to manage his workload carefully following his recent discomfort.
An important meeting with Valencia is also approaching, giving Madrid little reason to rush the midfielder if he has not fully recovered.
Valverde has recently been Mourinho's preferred option at right-back, while Trent Alexander-Arnold occupied the position throughout the victory over Racing Santander.
Denzel Dumfries could therefore keep his place against AEK Athens, with Valverde potentially starting on the bench. His involvement will ultimately depend on his fitness and Mourinho's assessment.
