Former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp has named Unai Emery and Eddie Howe as the two managers Manchester United should consider if they decide to part ways with Michael Carrick.
According to a report by Metro on Sunday, November 1, 2026, Redknapp believes the two Premier League managers are the most suitable options for United amid increasing questions about Carrick's position at Old Trafford.
The pressure on Carrick has intensified following Manchester United's 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. The result extended their winless run in all competitions to nine matches.
Morgan Rogers gave Chelsea the lead shortly after the break before United defender Lisandro Martinez was sent off after receiving a second yellow card. Cole Palmer subsequently converted the penalty to secure victory for Xabi Alonso's team.
The defeat left Manchester United in 17th position in the Premier League table after nine matches, staying outside the relegation zone only because of goal difference.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Redknapp suggested that Emery and Howe should be the leading candidates if United decide to appoint a new manager.
"There are only, I think, two runners," he said. "Listen, Michael Carrick is still in the job so it’s unfair to be saying it.
"But if that’s the case, if this doesn’t improve, it’s inevitable that he’s going to lose his job. It can only be him \[Emery\] really and Eddie Howe."
Redknapp praised Emery's managerial experience and work at Aston Villa, suggesting that his abilities make him a strong candidate for the Manchester United position. However, he questioned whether the Spaniard would be willing to leave Villa Park, considering his influence over the club's football project.
He also mentioned Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann as another possible name but maintained that Emery would be his preferred choice.
"With his abilities, he would probably be the only one that I would trust to be able to do it," Redknapp added.
"I don’t believe anyone else is just going to go in there with a manager and an assistant and change it. There are so many things behind the scenes that need to change."
Meanwhile, Carrick faces mounting pressure to improve United's performances and results in their upcoming fixtures as speculation about his future continues.
