He Knows He Must Keep Working – Spain Coach Reveals Why Barcelona Star Was Left Out of Squad

According to a report by Barca Universal on Friday, November 6, 2026, Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has explained why Barcelona midfielder Gavi was left out of his squad for the upcoming November international fixtures.

The national team coach attributed the decision to the 22 year old's limited playing time under Barcelona manager Hansi Flick and increased competition for places, rather than any doubts about his ability or importance to Spain.

Gavi will consequently miss Spain's upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against the Czech Republic and England.

De la Fuente announced his squad on November 6, with five Barcelona players earning invitations. Joan Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, Pedri, Fermin Lopez and Lamine Yamal were all included in the selection.

Speaking about Gavi's omission, the Spain manager acknowledged the midfielder's qualities but stressed that selection decisions must be based on performances and current form.

He also noted that several other talented players had been left out despite deserving consideration, while expressing his continued appreciation for the Barcelona youngster.

According to SPORT, De la Fuente believes Gavi must remain focused, work harder and continue developing if he wants to regain his place in the national team.

The midfielder's lack of regular football at Barcelona has played a significant role in his situation. He has accumulated just 211 minutes across seven appearances this season, starting only twice.

His limited involvement has made it difficult for him to establish the consistency required to compete with Spain's other midfield options.

Competition for places at Barcelona has also increased, with Flick having several alternatives available. Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, Marc Bernal and Fermin Lopez are among the players competing for positions in the middle of the pitch.

Although Gavi's versatility allows him to operate in different midfield roles and even play in wider positions, his ability to cover several areas has not been enough to secure regular selection.

Nevertheless, De la Fuente's comments suggest that the midfielder remains part of Spain's long-term plans. His immediate challenge will be to earn more playing time at Barcelona, improve his match fitness and demonstrate the form necessary to secure another international opportunity.
