Chelsea have been hit by fresh injury concerns despite securing consecutive Premier League victories under head coach Xabi Alonso, with several players facing uncertain availability ahead of Saturday’s London derby against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues have boosted their confidence with a 5-1 triumph over Bournemouth followed by a 2-0 victory against Everton. However, the growing list of absentees could complicate Alonso’s preparations as he attempts to maintain the team’s improved performances against their London rivals.
Goalkeeper Emi Martinez suffered a serious facial injury during the Everton match after accidentally colliding with Jarrad Branthwaite while attempting to deal with a dangerous free-kick. He received medical attention on the pitch before being stretchered off and taken to hospital for further examinations.
Medical assessments reportedly revealed a fractured jaw, which required surgery. Martinez subsequently confirmed that the operation had been successful and expressed optimism about returning within weeks. A potential comeback in November has been suggested, meaning young goalkeeper Mike Penders could be called upon to cover during his recovery.
Chelsea are also waiting for further information regarding Pep Chavarria, who missed the Everton fixture despite travelling with the squad. The summer signing from Rayo Vallecano reportedly developed an unspecified problem during training, leaving his availability for the Tottenham encounter uncertain.
Jorrel Hato replaced Chavarria in the starting lineup against Everton and could retain his place if the Spanish wing-back remains unavailable. Chelsea have yet to establish a definite timetable for Chavarria’s return, leaving Alonso with a decision to make about his defensive options.
Malo Gusto was another player absent from the Everton victory, although Alonso clarified that the French defender was dealing with an illness rather than an injury. His condition could improve in time for the weekend fixture, potentially providing Chelsea with another option as they prepare for Tottenham.
Captain Reece James, meanwhile, faces a more extended period away from action. The defender has undergone successful knee surgery and is expected to spend approximately three months recovering. If that estimate holds, he could return around the middle of January, leaving Chelsea without an important defensive presence for several weeks.
Jamie Gittens is continuing his rehabilitation from an ankle injury sustained while representing England’s Under-21 side. Alonso previously indicated that the winger would need several weeks to recover, making November a possible target for his return to competitive football.
Emmanuel Emegha also remains sidelined after suffering another hamstring setback. Although the striker has recently returned to training, Alonso is reportedly keen for him to regain full fitness before considering him for selection.
Despite the injury problems, Chelsea have an opportunity to use their clear midweek schedule to prepare for Tottenham. Alonso will hope that some of his recovering players can become available, giving him greater flexibility in a match that could further test the squad’s depth.
The consecutive victories have provided encouragement, but Chelsea’s ability to sustain that momentum may depend partly on how effectively they manage their current fitness concerns.
