Ghana captain Jordan Ayew finally opened his scoring account for Sheffield United, but his first goal for the English Championship side was not enough to prevent a 2-1 defeat against Charlton Athletic on Saturday, November 7, 2026.
The experienced forward found the back of the net in the 25th minute at The Valley, bringing Sheffield United level after the home side had taken an early lead through Millenic Alli.
Charlton started the encounter brightly and broke the deadlock in the 12th minute. Alli found space and fired home to put the hosts ahead, leaving Sheffield United with work to do.
Ayew, however, responded for the visitors 13 minutes later. After Kalvin Phillips delivered a free-kick into the danger area, Charlton goalkeeper Will Mannion failed to hold the ball cleanly, allowing the Ghanaian striker to react quickly and head it into the net from close range.
The equaliser marked an important personal milestone for Ayew, who had been waiting for his first goal since joining the Blades in September.
The 35-year-old arrived at Sheffield United as a free agent from Leicester City on September 8, 2026, after leaving the Foxes at the end of the previous campaign. He subsequently made his debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers on September 13.
Despite getting his name on the scoresheet, Ayew could not help his team secure a positive result. He played 71 minutes before being replaced by Thomas Cannon.
The contest remained level for much of the second half, with both sides struggling to create clear opportunities. Charlton eventually found the breakthrough in the 79th minute through substitute Matt Godden.
Godden had entered the match only a few minutes earlier and needed little time to make an impact. He connected with a cross from Alli and finished from close range to restore Charlton’s advantage.
Sheffield United pushed for another equaliser during the closing stages, but Charlton goalkeeper Mannion made important saves to protect his team’s lead.
The result gave Charlton all three points, while Sheffield United were left disappointed despite Ayew’s long-awaited breakthrough.
For the Ghana captain, the goal will nevertheless be an encouraging development as he looks to build momentum at club level ahead of his expected return to national team duty.
