Manchester United are facing mounting pressure after a disappointing start to the Premier League season, with manager Michael Carrick needing an urgent improvement in results. FootballTransfers reported on Friday, October 16, 2026, that United have collected only six points from their opening six league matches and remain without a victory in their last five games.
Their upcoming trip to Leeds United presents another challenge as concerns grow over the team’s performances and attacking output. Tensions have also increased following Lisandro Martínez’s reported criticism after the defeat to Atlético Madrid. The Argentine defender has reportedly been fined and subsequently apologised, while speculation persists that other players have concerns about the club’s summer recruitment.
United spent €76.5 million to bring Benjamin Šeško to Old Trafford last summer, but injuries have disrupted the striker’s early progress. In his absence or when unavailable, Matheus Cunha has frequently been asked to lead the attack.
The lack of consistent goals from a recognised centre-forward has become a major concern. According to the report, Cunha’s late, deflected equaliser against Fulham remains the only goal scored by a United starting centre-forward this season, highlighting the team’s difficulties in finding reliable attacking production.
Nicolas Jackson, meanwhile, has made a promising start to life at Aston Villa after joining from Chelsea for €55.5 million in August. The Senegal international has scored five goals in his first eight appearances, including a brace during Villa’s emphatic 6–0 Champions League victory over Fenerbahçe.
Although Jackson has occasionally struggled with his finishing, his physical strength, technical ability and contribution to build-up play have made him an effective attacking option. Those qualities appear to be translating well under Villa manager Unai Emery, whose system has allowed the forward to settle into the team.
United had previously been linked with Jackson before his loan move to Bayern Munich but ultimately did not compete with Villa for his signature. With Villa benefiting from his early contributions while United continue searching for goals, the decision has attracted renewed attention.
However, it remains uncertain whether Jackson would have delivered the same results at Old Trafford, given the differences between the two teams and their tactical approaches. United’s current difficulties extend beyond the centre-forward position, but the lack of consistent scoring has intensified scrutiny of their transfer decisions.
Carrick must now find a way to improve the team’s attacking effectiveness and stabilise results. The coming fixtures, beginning with Leeds, will be important as United attempt to recover from their difficult opening to the campaign.
