AS Roma explore loan deal with buy option for 23 year old Barcelona academy graduate

According to a report by Barca Universal on Monday, November 2, 2026, AS Roma are reportedly interested in signing Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde during the January transfer window as they consider a loan deal that could eventually lead to a permanent transfer.

The 23 year old left back has struggled to secure regular playing time under Barcelona manager Hansi Flick this season, raising questions about his long term future at the Spotify Camp Nou.

Balde has reportedly accumulated just over 100 minutes across four appearances in the current campaign, with increased competition for defensive positions limiting his opportunities in the starting eleven.

According to reports from Italy, relayed by Esport3, Roma have identified the Barcelona academy graduate as a potential addition as they look to strengthen their defence. The Serie A side, managed by Gian Piero Gasperini, are said to be exploring the possibility of signing him on loan until the end of the season, with an option to make the transfer permanent.

However, reaching an agreement could prove difficult because Barcelona have their own conditions regarding the defender's departure.

The Catalan club would reportedly prefer a permanent sale in January and are seeking a fee of at least €40 million for the Spanish international. If they agree to a loan arrangement, Barcelona are expected to demand that any purchase clause included in the deal is compulsory rather than optional.

These requirements could complicate Roma's pursuit, particularly because the Italian club would also need to consider Balde's salary.

Manchester United and Chelsea have also been linked with the defender, potentially creating further competition if Barcelona decide to make him available. Another possibility under consideration is including Balde in a transfer arrangement involving Juventus defender Andrea Cambiaso.

For now, Balde remains focused on improving his situation and earning more opportunities under Flick. However, the Barcelona manager has acknowledged that the defender's limited involvement has affected his confidence.

Speaking ahead of the Champions League meeting with Aston Villa, Flick said: “What's happening to him is normal; when you don't play often, you lack confidence. I see him training well, but we have to decide what's best for the team, and Joao Cancelo is in great form.”

Despite his reduced role, Balde remains a highly regarded product of Barcelona's La Masia academy. His future is likely to become clearer in January, depending on whether Roma can meet Barcelona's financial demands and agree to the conditions attached to a potential transfer.
