According to a report by FootballTransfers on Monday, November 2, 2026, Fabrizio Romano has provided fresh updates on Manchester United's potential January transfer plans, revealing that Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde could become available while Real Madrid remain favourites to sign teenage prospect JJ Gabriel.
The transfer journalist discussed both situations amid United's difficult start to the season and their need to strengthen several positions.
The Premier League club are reportedly considering reinforcements at left-back and centre-forward, with Benjamin Sesko expected to remain sidelined through injury until the new year.
Balde was previously identified as a potential target during the summer transfer window after United failed to complete a move for Lewis Hall.
However, negotiations failed to progress because Barcelona wanted a permanent transfer, while the Red Devils preferred a loan arrangement.
The Spanish defender was also unwilling to leave Barcelona, where he hoped to fight for his place in the team. However, his situation has reportedly changed, with the 23-year-old struggling to secure regular playing time under the club's current selection hierarchy.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano suggested that Balde's future could become an important transfer story when the January window opens.
"The situation that is getting more complicated is the situation of Alejandro Balde," Romano said.
He explained that Barcelona were prepared to consider selling the defender during the summer if they received a suitable offer, but no agreement was reached.
"Now, it's November, Balde is almost never playing, really limited minutes. Obviously, this one, compared to Gavi, could be one to watch in January in case of a good proposal, in case of a good opportunity."
Romano also provided an update on JJ Gabriel, whose long-term future at Manchester United remains uncertain.
The transfer expert revealed that Real Madrid are currently leading the race to sign the teenager despite competition from several European clubs.
"The club leading the race for JJ Gabriel since September is Real Madrid," Romano said.
He added that the Spanish giants remain actively involved in discussions over a possible deal, although no final agreement has been reached.
"In terms of verbal conversations, in terms of verbal talks, Real Madrid are working for JJ Gabriel and remain in the leading seat."
The latest developments leave Manchester United facing two separate transfer situations, with Balde potentially emerging as an opportunity to strengthen their defence, while Real Madrid continue to lead the pursuit of one of the club's promising young prospects.
