According to a report by Metro on Thursday, November 5, 2026, former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard believes Chelsea youngster Estevao could create a major selection dilemma for manager Xabi Alonso as the season progresses.
Alonso faced criticism after leaving the Brazilian winger on the bench during Chelsea's Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool last week. Reports also suggested that the teenager was unhappy with his limited playing opportunities.
However, Estevao made his first Premier League start of the season against Manchester United last Saturday and delivered an impressive performance in Chelsea's 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge.
Gerrard was particularly impressed by the 19-year-old's confidence, creativity and willingness to take on defenders rather than simply passing the ball to a teammate. Speaking on The Overlap, the former England midfielder described him as an exciting player who was enjoyable to watch.
He also praised Estevao's Brazilian flair, technical ability and direct approach, highlighting his willingness to attempt shots whenever opportunities arise.
Gerrard compared the winger's attacking instincts with those of some Liverpool forwards, suggesting that they sometimes hesitate in front of goal because they are looking for an additional pass or a better opportunity.
Reflecting on Estevao's display against United, Gerrard highlighted a move in which the youngster combined with a teammate before forcing an excellent save from the opposition goalkeeper.
He also recalled another attacking situation where Estevao decided to drive forward and attempt to score instead of slowing down the move and looking for a pass towards the edge of the penalty area.
According to Gerrard, such decisions demonstrate the youngster's determination to make an impression and establish himself as a regular member of Alonso's starting lineup.
However, his growing influence could complicate the manager's selection decisions when Joao Pedro returns from injury. Pedro Neto is also competing for an attacking position, leaving Alonso with several quality options to consider.
Estevao's performance against Manchester United has strengthened his argument for more regular involvement, while giving Chelsea's manager another important decision to make when selecting his attacking players.
