Barcelona Could Sell 27 year old Defender in January as Chelsea and Bayern Munich Circle

According to a report by Barca Universal on Saturday, November 7, 2026, Barcelona could consider selling Jules Kounde during the January transfer window, with Chelsea and Bayern Munich reportedly monitoring the French defender's situation at the club.

The Catalan giants may use the proceeds from his potential departure to finance other transfer targets as manager Hansi Flick continues to reshape his squad.

Kounde's future has reportedly become uncertain because of his reduced playing time this season. The 27 year old has accumulated just 458 minutes across eight appearances in all competitions during the 2026/27 campaign, raising questions about his long term role under Flick.

Chelsea are among the clubs keeping an eye on developments. The Premier League side previously came close to signing the defender in 2022 before Barcelona secured his services from Sevilla for approximately €60 million.

Bayern Munich are also reportedly interested in revisiting their pursuit after monitoring the Frenchman's situation during the summer transfer window. However, neither club has reached an agreement with Barcelona, and any potential transfer will depend on negotiations and the Spanish club's valuation.

Kounde's departure could provide Barcelona with additional funds to strengthen other areas of the squad. Journalist Mateo Moretto previously suggested that the defender's transfer fee could help finance the arrival of a new centre forward or another right back.

Signing a striker remains one of Barcelona's priorities, while recruiting another right-back could become necessary if Kounde leaves.

However, allowing the Frenchman to depart would also create a significant selection challenge for Flick. His ability to play both centre back and right back makes him a valuable member of the squad, particularly when injuries affect the defensive options.

Barcelona have already experienced several defensive fitness concerns this season. Kounde suffered an ankle sprain in October, while Eric Garcia sustained a thigh injury. Young defender Xavi Espart also suffered an ankle problem that was expected to keep him out for several weeks.

These circumstances could make Barcelona cautious about approving Kounde's departure in January. Although his sale could generate funds for new signings, the club must first ensure that Flick has enough defensive cover to cope with the demands of the second half of the season.
