According to a report by FootballTransfers on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, Michael Carrick’s future at Manchester United is becoming increasingly uncertain, with the club reportedly considering Aston Villa manager Unai Emery as a possible replacement. However, appointing the Spaniard could cost United around €23.8 million £20 million in compensation.
United officials are believed to rate Emery highly. Since taking charge of Aston Villa almost four years ago, the 54 year old has strengthened his reputation as one of Europe’s leading managers.
Emery has guided Villa to two top four Premier League finishes and won the 2026 Europa League title, making him an attractive candidate for the Old Trafford job.
However, United would need to pay a significant compensation fee to secure his services. Such a move could make Emery one of the most expensive managerial appointments in football history.
The record is held by Julian Nagelsmann, who joined Bayern Munich from RB Leipzig in July 2021 for a reported fee of around €25 million £20.9 million.
United are also reportedly considering the German coach as a possible candidate. Nagelsmann previously worked with United recruitment chief Christopher Vivell at Leipzig, which could strengthen his chances of being considered.
Another option is Eddie Howe, who left Newcastle United in July. The Englishman is reportedly available for a compensation fee of around €3.5 million £3 million.
United could also consider experienced managers such as Antonio Conte, who previously managed Chelsea and recently left Napoli.
Carrick’s position has come under increasing pressure following a disappointing run of results. United have reportedly recorded only two wins and six defeats in their first 12 matches of the campaign.
The club are preparing for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Chelsea, with Carrick overseeing training at Carrington on Tuesday despite growing speculation about his future.
Carrick was appointed permanent head coach in May after guiding United to third place during a successful interim spell last season. However, recent performances have raised doubts about his ability to maintain that progress.
Tensions have also reportedly increased following captain Bruno Fernandes’s alleged criticism of Carrick’s tactics after United’s 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como. Fernandes was subsequently named among the substitutes for Sunday’s disappointing loss to Bournemouth.
Meanwhile, Emery is focused on preparing Aston Villa for their Carabao Cup meeting with Bournemouth.
The Spaniard has an impressive record, having won the Europa League three consecutive times with Sevilla between 2014 and 2016. He also led Villarreal to the trophy in 2021 after defeating Manchester United in the final and won seven trophies during his time at Paris Saint Germain.
United’s decision on Carrick’s future could therefore determine whether they pursue Emery or turn to another experienced candidate.
