Sekhukhune United head coach Papi Zothwane has made a bold statement ahead of his team's Carling Knockout Cup quarter-final encounter against Orlando Pirates, insisting that his players have what it takes to defeat the Buccaneers.
The Babina Noko coach is confident that his team can overcome the reigning Betway Premiership champions despite their difficult recent record against the Soweto giants.
According to a report by iDiski Times published on November 7, 2026, Zothwane believes Sekhukhune United must approach the encounter with confidence rather than fear, despite knowing the quality and strength of their opponents.
The two teams are familiar with each other, having already faced off three times this season, with Sekhukhune suffering defeat on all three occasions.
However, Zothwane insists that previous results will not determine what happens in their latest meeting. He believes his players must focus on delivering a strong performance and executing their game plan if they want to secure qualification for the semi-finals.
Speaking ahead of the encounter, the Sekhukhune United coach acknowledged the intimidating atmosphere at Orlando Amstel Arena but maintained that his players have been mentally prepared for the challenge.
He explained that every team enters a football match with the intention of performing better than its opponent and believes his side should have the same mentality against Pirates.
Zothwane also made it clear that his team would not travel to the stadium already defeated. According to the coach, confidence and belief are essential qualities for any manager preparing his players for an important cup fixture.
He further expressed his trust in the players and the approach they have been working on ahead of the match.
The coach stated that Sekhukhune believe they can win at the Orlando Amstel Arena and secure their place in the next round of the competition.
For Orlando Pirates, however, the comments will serve as another reminder that their opponents are determined to challenge them despite their previous meetings.
The Buccaneers have established themselves as a difficult team to beat at home under head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. Their supporters will also expect the team to maintain its strong performances and continue its pursuit of silverware.
Pirates have enjoyed a successful period and will be eager to avoid an unexpected setback in a competition where one defeat would end their hopes of lifting the trophy.
Nevertheless, Sekhukhune United have made their intentions clear. They are not travelling to Orlando Amstel Arena simply to participate but to compete for a place in the Carling Knockout semi-finals.
With Zothwane publicly expressing his confidence, attention will now turn to whether Babina Noko can finally overcome the Buccaneers after three consecutive defeats this season.
It promises to be an interesting encounter, with Pirates looking to protect their home record and Sekhukhune hoping to produce a major cup upset.
One thing is certain: Zothwane believes his players have what it takes to beat Orlando Pirates.
