Old Tafo MP Raises Alarm Over Black Stars Focus as Other National Teams Suffer

Ghana's heavy focus on the Black Stars has come under scrutiny after Old Tafo Member of Parliament Vincent Ekow Assafuah warned that other national teams are being left behind, raising questions about the country’s priorities in sports development.

Assafuah made the remarks while donating to Ghana’s national amputee football team, the Black Challenge, ahead of the 2026 WAFF Amputee Football World Cup in Mexico.

The legislator argued that the challenges facing Ghanaian sports go beyond political disagreements, describing the situation as a systemic problem that requires a lasting solution.

There is so much attention on the National Men's team, the Black Stars, leaving all the other disciplines to suffer. The issue at hand is not a party problem but a systemic one that requires resolution, he stated.

His comments highlight concerns about whether Ghana’s sporting resources and attention are distributed adequately among the various national teams representing the country internationally.

The Black Stars remain a major attraction in Ghanaian football, commanding significant public interest whenever they compete. However, Assafuah’s remarks suggest that the prominence of the senior men’s team should not overshadow the needs of other athletes pursuing international success.

The Black Challenge is preparing to represent Ghana at the 2026 WAFF Amputee Football World Cup in Mexico. The team’s participation places the spotlight on a discipline that also carries Ghana’s national colours onto the international stage.

Assafuah’s donation offers support to the team ahead of the competition, while his accompanying comments draw attention to the wider challenges facing sports development.

For national teams outside the spotlight, adequate preparation and consistent institutional support are important considerations as they seek to compete against international opponents.

The MP’s position is that addressing the imbalance requires a broader review of the country’s sporting system rather than treating the matter as a disagreement between political parties.

His intervention also raises a significant question about Ghana’s sporting ambitions: how can the country achieve success across multiple disciplines if attention remains heavily concentrated on one national team?

As the Black Challenge prepares for its tournament in Mexico, Assafuah’s message is a call for a more inclusive approach to sports development, one that recognises the importance of supporting national teams beyond the Black Stars.

His central argument is clear: Ghana’s sporting development must extend beyond its most famous football team to give other national sides the support and recognition they deserve.
