Taiwo Awoniyi opened his Premier League goals account for Coventry in their 3-1 home win over Sunderland on Saturday.
Awoniyi scored in the 37th minute to put Coventry 2-0 after Tatsuhiro had broken the deadlock on in the 17th minute.
Jack Rudoni added the third goal on 52 minutes before Enzo Le Fee pulled a goal back for Sunderland from the penalty spot on 67 minutes.
Awoniyi was later replaced in the 72nd minute. His Nigerian teammate Frank Onyeka was not included in the squad for the game.
It was return to winning ways for Coventry who had lost back-to-back games prior to their game with Sunderland.
At the Etihad, Manchester City suffered a 1-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion, who lost to the Cityzens 4-3 on penalties in the Carabao Cup in midweek.
Yasin Ayari was the hero for Brighton as he slotted home from close range in the 11th minute after City defence failed to deal with a dangerous cross sent into the box.
Despite the City, City remain top in the league table on 21 points while Brighton are third on 19 points.
