Julian Nagelsmann is being touted as a possible candidate to manage Manchester United. Oliver Kahn, of all people, has now expressed serious reservations about the move.
"From his point of view, this is not an easy situation. He is not someone with extensive experience, especially when it comes to foreign teams," the former Bayern Munich goalkeeper and chief executive said on "Triple - der Hagedorn Fußballtalk" on RTL/Sky Sport , adding: "The Premier League and Manchester United are not known for having had much continuity in the managerial position in recent years."
Italian surprise package Como 1907 thrashed the Red Devils 4-1 in the Champions League, leaving manager Michael Carrick reportedly under serious pressure. Manchester United are also miles short of their own expectations in the Premier League, with just seven points from seven games. His dismissal is said to be only a matter of time, and even the players have criticised him. The day after the Champions League debacle, which may have been the final straw, the respected Telegraph was among those reporting on a potential move for Nagelsmann to Old Trafford. Antonio Conte is also reportedly considered a candidate.
Kahn recalls Nagelsmann's failure at Bayern Munich
Kahn also reflected on Nagelsmann's recent jobs. "Bayern Munich and the national team were already major experiences for him. You have to think carefully: Where do my strengths lie? Which club can I really help? I think Julian is someone who can build and further develop a club and a team. Only he can know whether Manchester United are the right next step for that," he said.
After the embarrassing World Cup exit against Paraguay in the round of 32, the DFB and Nagelsmann parted ways in the summer. Jürgen Klopp was appointed as his successor. Before his roughly three years as national team manager, Nagelsmann coached the German record champions until his somewhat surprising dismissal in March 2023, when Thomas Tuchel replaced him. Kahn himself and the then sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic were chiefly responsible for the decision.
Why Nagelsmann's dismissal also cost Kahn and Salihamidzic their jobs
The abrupt departure drew repeated, sharp criticism. Bayern still had a chance of winning titles in all three competitions when Nagelsmann was dismissed: they were second in the Bundesliga, one point behind, and in the quarter-finals of both the Champions League and the DFB Cup. Tuchel secured the league title on the final matchday, but Bayern went out of both cup competitions immediately, against SC Freiburg and Manchester City. Kahn and Salihamidzic lost their jobs at the end of the season, with unilateral decisions such as Nagelsmann's dismissal also a factor.
Despite that, Kahn stopped short of advising Nagelsmann against trying to lead Manchester United out of their crisis. "If Julian is convinced that he is the one to get Manchester United back on the path to success, then he should try," he said. Roman Weidenfeller, also a guest on the programme, added: "I do think German coaches, especially Julian Nagelsmann, are very popular abroad in terms of their standing."
