The uncertainty over the future of Pedro Porro has led to Tottenham Hotspur tracking a 22-year-old, who impressed at the World Cup earlier in the year.
The speculation linking Pedro Porro with Barcelona and Real Madrid refuses to go away, with the Tottenham man earning superstar status in his home country after his outstanding showing for Spain in their successful World Cup campaign.
While the experienced full-back extended his deal with Spurs in the summer, his latest statement about his future may come as a worry to the North London club.
Porro admitted that he dreams of returning to Spain, refusing to rule out a move to Los Blancos or the Blaugrana.
In fact, sources have even claimed that Barca have already spoken to the Spurs star’s agent about a possible move to Camp Nou in January or next summer.
It emerged last week that Spurs could look to replace Porro with another right-back who starred at the World Cup. TEAMtalk first reported that Tottenham have an eye on Villarreal’s Alex Freeman, whose stock has risen steadily since the start of the year.
A new report in Football Insider has now confirmed that the Lilywhites are indeed tracking the USA international, having been impressed by his displays in La Liga and the Champions League.
The report claims that Spurs’ interest in Freeman is directly down to the uncertainty over the future of Porro after his recent comments.
However, it is revealed that Tottenham are one of numerous clubs to have been impressed by the Villarreal star. De Zerbi’s men could face competition from Man City and Man United, who have both scouted the youngster.
Mauricio Pochettino is a big fan of Freeman, having managed him with the US Men’s National Team. During the World Cup in the summer, Poch said: “He is so humble, he has an amazing profile, he always listens. You really enjoy being with him, coaching him, and [he] is an amazing player. For me, [he has potential] to be one of the best players at his position in the world.”
The Lilywhites’ interest in Freeman was also confirmed by journalist Pete O’Rourke, who revealed that the American’s versatility has caught the eye of Premier League sides.
The journalist suggested that United could be Tottenham’s biggest challengers in the race for the Villarreal star, with the Red Devils wanting to rebuild their backline.
O’Rourke told Football Insider: “Tottenham are another team that are looking at Freeman. Manchester United, as they’re looking to rebuild their defence, are another side that are looking at Alex Freeman. He’s a great player. Great versatility. He can play anywhere across the backline.
“And as I said, he’s playing at a good level over in Spain, Champions League football as well. So it’s no surprise that he has emerged on the radar of a number of Premier League clubs.”
