Champions League Matchday 4 delivered two contrasting nights of action, with defensive fortitude and attacking endeavour each getting a chance to shine.
Tuesday evening wasn’t short of goals but still delivered nine clean sheets over nine fixtures, including a 0-0 draw between Bodø / Glimt and Lille.
In fact, Manchester United’s remarkable 3-2 comeback victory against Roma was the only match that didn’t feature a shut-out, as rearguard resilience largely came to the fore.
The early kick-off between Shakhtar Donetsk and Sporting CP (1-0) proved to be a tight affair, while a first-half brace from Aleksey Batrakov helped Galatasaray beat Stuttgart 2-0 in the same time slot.
Those match-ups preceded a host of dominant performances across the continent, as Barcelona, Inter, LASK and Paris Saint-Germain all triumphed by three goals or more – without their backlines being breached.
Wednesday couldn’t have been more different, though, with no team registering a clean sheet in any of the nine games played.
What’s more, the evening was headlined by a stunning 9-1 win for Como away at Lens, as Cesc Fàbregas’s side recorded the biggest away victory in Champions League history.
With a topsy-turvy Matchday 4 delivering 70 goals across the board, there is sure to be plenty of intrigue when it comes to this week’s defensive stats from Europe’s premier competition.
Read on to find out who topped the charts for a host of key metrics, from most tackles, interceptions and clearances to aerial duel wins and defensive third regains…
Real Madrid were made to work harder than they may have anticipated for three points against AEK Athens.
Los Blancos needed a 92nd-minute strike from Federico Valverde to avoid an upset and triumph 3-2 in the Greek capital on Wednesday.
They also had the defensive efforts of midfielder Eduardo Camavinga to thank for that victory, after their No.6 made nine tackles at the Agia Sophia Stadium – more than any other player across the matchday.
Manchester City’s Elliot Anderson was just behind on seven tackles, in a game that produced an identical scoreline for the away side (3-2 vs RB Leipzig).
He was joined on that figure by Benjamin André, who featured for Lille in the aforementioned scoreless draw at Bodø / Glimt.
Five further players made six tackles each, in Wesley (Roma), Tom Bischof (Bayern Munich), David Raum (RB Leipzig), Boubacar Kamara (Aston Villa) and Valentín Gómez (Real Betis).
Notably, Gómez was only on the pitch for 70 minutes in the Heliopolitanos’ 2-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

Viking were fully aware that three points was a necessity against Sabah FK, in order to have a serious chance of reaching the play-off round.
And the Norwegians delivered in style, beating Valdas Dambrauskas’ team 4-1 to record their first win of the league stage.
Centre-back Henrik Falchener was at the heart of that success, having made a round-leading six interceptions at the Lyse Arena.
Elsewhere, a trio of players finished the gameweek on five interceptions each, though only one of them ended up on the winning side.
Manuel Akanji’s contributions aided Inter in their 3-0 victory at Feyenoord, but Leonardo Balerdi (Roma) and Sergi Cardona (Villarreal) were on the wrong end of defeats to Manchester United (2-3) and Paris Saint-Germain (0-6), respectively.
Cardona only came on at half-time with PSG already in a 4-0 lead, making it even more impressive that he cut out five passes in just 45 minutes.

Two players towered above the rest when it came to completed clearances during Matchday 4.
Centre-back Carlos Augusto (Inter) led the way with 13, but Club Brugge’s Brandon Mechele was only just behind him on 12.
The Belgians are enjoying a continental campaign to remember, having now won three consecutive Champions League games after losing their opener to Aston Villa.
Wednesday’s 2-1 victory at PSV is their latest successful outing – and Mechele had a big hand in securing a result that takes the Blauw-Zwart up to ninth in the table.
There is a bit of a drop off to third place, with Steve Solvet (Sabah FK) and Ismail Yüksek (Fenerbahçe) each on nine clearances.
Yüksek can be particularly delighted with his evening’s work, as Fenerbahçe claimed a memorable 3-2 win over Liverpool at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium despite trailing twice.

Armando Obispo can be disappointed to have nothing to show for his efforts last night, after winning a sky-high eight aerial duels in PSV’s home defeat to Club Brugge (1-2).
Stuttgart’s Ramon Hendriks may be feeling a similar sense of regret, too. He ranked joint-second with six successful aerial battles on Matchday 4, but couldn’t stop Die Schwaben succumbing to a 2-0 loss at Galatasaray.
It was better news for Arsenal and Gabriel Magalhães, though, with the Brazilian also winning six aerial duels.
They held on to a 2-1 win at Slavia Prague, despite an unexpectedly shaky second half from the Gunners.
Three players placed below them on five each, including an attacking entry from Atlético de Madrid in Alexander Sørloth.
The 6ft 5in striker was joined on that figure by Diogo Dalot (Manchester United) and Jan Bednarek (Porto), the latter of which has been strong in their air throughout this Champions League season.

Obispo isn’t the only PSV player who might feel aggrieved by the outcome of their game against Club Brugge – goalkeeper Matěj Kovář will surely be frustrated, too.
Kovář made more defensive third regains than any other player across the round (10), which is particularly commendable considering his position.
However, he wasn’t alone in being on the losing side despite winning the ball back for his team so frequently.
Joint second-place Ian Maatsen (Aston Villa) and Pedro Henrique (Shakhtar Donetsk) – each with eight defensive third regains – couldn’t stop their teams going unrewarded against Barcelona (0-3) and Sporting CP (0-1).
It was also a mixed bag for those just below them in the rankings.
Kristoffer Haugen (Viking) and Matheus Nunes (Manchester City) both won the ball seven times in defensive areas and enjoyed successful evenings, but the inverse is true for Pablo Barrios (Atlético Madrid) and Aboubakary Koïta (AEK Athens) on six regains apiece.
