Cristiano Ronaldo is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, but describing the Portuguese superstar as BOAT rather than GOAT introduces an interesting distinction in football debates.
While GOAT means “Greatest of All Time”, BOAT emphasizes a more specific meaning in football.
BOAT refers to the Ballon d’Or of All Time, a fan-voting initiative organised by France Football to identify the greatest Ballon d’Or-winning performance in football history.
Ronaldo has emerged as the winner of the inaugural BOAT poll, with his 2008 Ballon d’Or-winning season receiving the highest number of votes.
Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has won the inaugural Ballon d’Or of All Time (BOAT) recognition after fans voted his 2008 Ballon d’Or-winning season as the greatest in football history.
The 41-year-old forward emerged ahead of his long-time rival Lionel Messi in the fan poll organised by France Football, the publication behind the prestigious Ballon d’Or award.
Ronaldo’s 2008 campaign, during which he played for Manchester United, finished first in the voting, while Messi’s 2012 season came second.
Ronaldo also secured third place with his 2017 Ballon d’Or-winning campaign, further strengthening his position in the rankings.
The BOAT initiative featured 10 legendary footballers who had won the Ballon d’Or at least twice. They included Ronaldo, Messi, Johan Cruyff, Michel Platini, Marco van Basten, Franz Beckenbauer and Ronaldo Nazario.
What does BOAT mean?
BOAT stands for Ballon d’Or of All Time. It is a fan-voting initiative designed to identify the greatest Ballon d’Or-winning season in football history.
It is different from GOAT, which means Greatest of All Time and is commonly used to describe the greatest athlete in different types of sport.
The BOAT poll did not ask fans to decide who was the greatest footballer of all time based on their entire careers. Instead, it asked them to select the most outstanding individual season among previous Ballon d’Or winners.
Ronaldo’s victory therefore recognises his remarkable 2007/08 campaign rather than declaring him the undisputed greatest footballer in history.
Why Ronaldo’s 2008 season stood out
Ronaldo enjoyed an exceptional 2007/08 season with Manchester United under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
He scored 42 goals in all competitions, including 31 goals in the Premier League, helping Manchester United win the English league title and the UEFA Champions League.
He also won the Premier League Golden Boot and scored in the Champions League final against Chelsea, which Manchester United won on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
His performances earned him his first Ballon d’Or in 2008, ahead of Messi and Spain international Fernando Torres.
Ronaldo went on to win the Ballon d’Or four more times, in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017, taking his career tally to five.
Ronaldo and Messi dominate BOAT rankings
The final BOAT rankings highlighted the remarkable individual achievements of Ronaldo and Messi, who occupied all the top 10 positions.
Ronaldo claimed five places, while Messi secured the remaining five.
The result adds another chapter to the long-running debate between the two football legends, whose achievements have defined an era of modern football.
