Nigeria’s Flamingos have made history by reaching their first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final after defeating Brazil 3-1 in Wednesday’s semi-final in Morocco.
The Nigerian team produced an impressive second-half performance to overcome their South American opponents and book a place in Saturday’s final against Japan.
After a goalless first half, Queen Joseph broke the deadlock in the 56th minute, finishing a pass from Oluwakemi Adegbuyi to give Nigeria the lead.
The Flamingos continued to press and doubled their advantage in the 71st minute through Awawu Bashiru, who found the net after receiving a pass from Joseph.
Bashiru then completed her brace in the 80th minute, showing individual brilliance to beat the Brazilian defence and make it 3-0.
Brazil managed to score a consolation goal in the 89th minute through Greise Kelly, but the late effort could not prevent Nigeria from securing a memorable victory.
The result takes the Flamingos into their maiden final in the competition, surpassing their previous best performance of third place at the 2022 edition in India.
Standing between Nigeria and the world title is Japan, who booked their place in the final after eliminating defending champions North Korea in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw.
The final will take place on Saturday, November 7, in Morocco.
For the Flamingos, it is an opportunity to turn a historic campaign into an even bigger achievement by winning Nigeria’s first FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title.
