According to a report by BBC Sport on Tuesday November 3, 2026, Manchester United produced a remarkable second-half comeback to defeat AS Roma 3-2 in their Champions League encounter, recovering from a two-goal deficit after an extremely disappointing opening performance.
Roma started brightly and took the lead in the 11th minute when Rodrigo Mora delivered an excellent lofted pass, allowing Matias Soule to finish confidently inside the penalty area.
The visitors doubled their advantage six minutes later after Ayden Heaven handled the ball inside the penalty area. Donyell Malen converted the resulting spot-kick, leaving United facing another difficult evening.
United struggled to establish attacking rhythm throughout the opening period, with Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha attempting to create opportunities. However, Roma maintained their defensive organisation.
The hosts nearly reduced the deficit before halftime, but Kobbie Mainoo's effort was denied by goalkeeper Devis Stiven Vasquez Llach. Soule also struck the woodwork for Roma.
Manchester United returned after the interval with greater determination, although Carlos Baleba's injury forced Michael Carrick to introduce Youri Tielemans into midfield.
Their comeback began in the 58th minute when Bruno Fernandes converted a retaken penalty after Gianluca Mancini's foul. The Portuguese midfielder initially missed, but scored following the referee's decision to retake.
United continued applying pressure, and Bryan Mbeumo nearly equalised when his attempted lob struck the left post in the 59th minute.
The equaliser finally arrived in the 83rd minute as Fernandes delivered an excellent cross, allowing Matheus Cunha to finish into the bottom-right corner.
Just three minutes later, Cunha completed United's turnaround, converting Shea Lacey's excellent pass with a precise finish inside the right post.
However, the Brazilian was dismissed in stoppage time after receiving his second yellow card, leaving United with ten players.
Despite Roma's late pressure, Manchester United secured an impressive 3-2 victory after recovering from two goals behind.
