According to a report by Barca Blaugranes on Friday October 16, 2026, Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has confirmed that Frenkie de Jong is ready to return to action ahead of Saturday’s La Liga clash against Real Betis, providing a significant boost to the Catalan side.
The Dutch midfielder has missed the opening two months of the season while recovering from a knee injury sustained during the World Cup. However, he has returned to training and could feature for Barcelona at La Cartuja.
Speaking ahead of the encounter, Flick expressed his delight at having De Jong available again, praising his quality and commitment during training.
“Everyone knows Frenkie is a top player. I’m very happy he’s back and available; he gives us a new option,” Flick said, adding that the midfielder appeared ready to play some minutes.
The Barcelona manager also addressed speculation about De Jong potentially being used as a centre-back, explaining that he had only been tested in defensive situations during specific training exercises.
Flick’s comments suggest that De Jong remains primarily part of his midfield plans, where his passing ability, composure and capacity to control possession could prove valuable.
His return will also increase competition for places in Barcelona’s midfield, particularly with Rodri and Pedri offering further quality and tactical options. Flick acknowledged that managing a squad filled with talented players is not easy, but believes the competition can push everyone to maintain high standards.
De Jong is unlikely to be rushed back into a full workload after his lengthy absence, but his availability gives Barcelona another important option as they prepare for a demanding run of fixtures.
