Alonso Reveals Emi Martinez’s Condition After Being Stretchered Off Against Everton

According to a report by Evening Standard on Saturday, October 17, 2026, Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has confirmed that goalkeeper Emi Martinez was conscious when he left Hill Dickinson Stadium and was taken to hospital for precautionary tests following a frightening collision during the Blues’ 2-0 Premier League victory over Everton.

The Argentine goalkeeper suffered the injury in the second half after colliding with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite while both players challenged for the ball.

The incident left both players on the ground, prompting medical personnel to enter the pitch and provide treatment. However, Martinez appeared to suffer the more serious injury and required several minutes of medical attention.

Trainers and paramedics attended to the Chelsea goalkeeper for approximately 10 minutes before he was stretchered off the pitch and transported to a local hospital for further examinations.

Branthwaite recovered sufficiently to continue playing, while Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders replaced Martinez for the remainder of the contest.

Speaking after Chelsea secured the victory, Alonso provided an update on the goalkeeper’s condition, explaining that the hospital visit was precautionary.

The Spanish coach indicated that Martinez was conscious when he left the stadium but said further information would depend on the results of the medical examinations.

Chelsea are expected to provide additional information about the goalkeeper’s condition when further details become available.

Martinez had produced an encouraging performance before the injury, making important saves to deny Everton attackers Jack Grealish and Thierno Barry during the first half.

His departure raised concerns for Chelsea, but replacement Penders performed well after coming on, helping the visitors preserve their advantage and complete their first Premier League clean sheet since mid-January.

Meanwhile, Pedro Neto was Chelsea’s match-winner, scoring twice to secure all three points against Everton. The Portuguese winger opened the scoring shortly after half-time before adding a second goal in stoppage time.

Following the final whistle, Neto expressed sympathy for Martinez and dedicated Chelsea’s victory to the injured goalkeeper.

The winger praised his teammate’s contribution and stressed that the squad’s thoughts were with him following the worrying incident.

Chelsea’s victory strengthened their position in the Premier League standings, but Martinez’s condition remained a major concern after the match.

The club will await the outcome of the precautionary tests before providing a more detailed assessment of the goalkeeper’s injury and his potential availability for upcoming fixtures.
