According to a report by BBC Sport on Saturday, October 17, 2026, Emiliano Martinez, the goalkeeper for Chelsea, left the Hill Dickinson Stadium match against Everton on a stretcher after appearing to sustain a serious head injury.
Martinez and Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite were involved in a collision in the 75th minute as they both attempted to gain possession of the ball. After the fight, both players went down, which worried the other players and fans in the stadium.
Quickly, medical personnel rushed onto the field to tend to the two players; however, Martinez necessitated further attention, and the game was halted for approximately ten minutes so that he could receive treatment.
The concerning incident, which ultimately resulted in the Chelsea goalkeeper being carried off on a stretcher, diverted attention from Xabi Alonso's team's otherwise important afternoon.
The 34-year-old could still move his arms as he was helped off the field, but it was unclear how bad his injury was. The Argentine goalkeeper has not sustained a serious injury, which is good news for Chelsea fans who have a lot riding on the next few Premier League matches.
Though the collision was a concerning moment for both clubs, Branthwaite was able to continue playing after receiving treatment from Everton's medical team.
In the dying minutes of the match, Mike Penders came on as a substitute for Martinez and started in goal. After the long stoppage, Chelsea had to keep their concentration in order to defend their lead and win away from home.
In spite of the terrifying incident, Pedro Neto scored twice to lead Alonso's Chelsea to a 2-0 victory over Everton. But the club needs more information about Martinez's health before they can decide how serious the goalkeeper's injury is.
