Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole has questioned Lisandro Martinez's future at Manchester United following the defender's disappointing display in their 2-0 Premier League defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
According to a report by Metro on Saturday, 31 October 2026, Cole believes Martinez has reached the end of his Manchester United career after his costly dismissal against Xabi Alonso's side.
Manchester United extended their winless run to nine matches following the defeat, increasing the pressure on manager Michael Carrick.
The result also leaves the Red Devils at risk of slipping into the Premier League relegation zone before the weekend ends.
Chelsea took the lead five minutes into the second half through Morgan Rogers, who produced an impressive individual effort after driving through United's midfield before beating Senne Lammens.
Martinez struggled to deal with Rogers' movement and received a yellow card shortly afterwards for pulling back the Chelsea midfielder during another dangerous attack.
The Argentine defender's afternoon took a worse turn when he raised his forearm towards Wesley Fofana while defending a corner delivered by Estêvão Willian.
Following a VAR review, the referee awarded Chelsea a penalty and showed Martinez a second yellow card, leaving Manchester United with 10 players.
Speaking on TNT Sports, Cole questioned whether the defender should remain at Old Trafford.
"Whatever the next Manchester United, looks like, I think Lisandro Martinez has run his course," Cole said.
Although he acknowledged Martinez's achievements with Argentina, the former Chelsea midfielder argued that the defender had made too many costly mistakes for Manchester United.
"We know he’s been fabulous in an Argentina shirt and achieved some wonderful things.
"But he’s at the scene of the crime too often for Manchester United and is at fault for moments and goals like that. So I think that’s probably his time done."
Cole also expressed disappointment with Martinez's reaction during the incident that resulted in his dismissal.
"This is unfathomable. He loses his rag. I think he has been muscled in the corner and he has found himself out of position and lost his rag. It’s a massive mistake."
Chelsea subsequently extended their advantage when Cole Palmer converted the resulting penalty in the 64th minute.
Meanwhile, Martinez's future at Manchester United could become a major talking point, with his current contract due to expire at the end of the season. The club, however, have the option to extend his deal by another 12 months.
