Amad, Cunha and Mbeumo all hit the surf celebration, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside

According to a report by ESPN UK on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Manchester United were left frustrated after Matheus Cunha’s surfing celebration was cut short by a VAR decision during their 2-0 defeat to Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday.

Cunha appeared to have given United the lead at Stamford Bridge after converting a close-range opportunity, prompting him and his teammates, including Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo, to join in the celebration. However, their excitement quickly turned to disappointment when the goal was ruled out for offside following a video assistant referee review.

The incident summed up a frustrating afternoon for Michael Carrick’s side, who created several promising opportunities in the first half but failed to make them count before Chelsea took control after the break.

According to reports from the match, Cunha finished from close range after Harry Maguire won the initial header from a corner. However, a VAR review determined that the Brazilian forward was in an offside position when the ball came back to him, resulting in the goal being overturned.

The disallowed goal was particularly disappointing for United, who had started brightly and looked capable of troubling Chelsea's defence. Amad also came close to scoring, while Mbeumo contributed to several promising attacking moves.

Despite their encouraging first-half performance, United went into the break without a goal, leaving them to rue their missed chances.

United’s failure to capitalise on their first-half opportunities proved costly after the restart. Chelsea returned with greater attacking intensity and broke the deadlock in the 50th minute through Morgan Rogers.

The England international produced an impressive individual effort, driving through United’s defence before lifting the ball over goalkeeper Senne Lammens to give the hosts the advantage.

The goal changed the momentum of the contest, with Chelsea growing in confidence as United struggled to recover.

The situation became even more difficult for Carrick’s men when defender Lisandro Martinez was sent off in the second half. Following a VAR review of an incident involving Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana, Martinez received a second yellow card, and the hosts were awarded a penalty.

Cole Palmer stepped up to convert the spot kick, extending Chelsea’s lead to 2-0 and leaving United with a difficult task with 10 men.

Palmer’s penalty was his 50th Premier League goal for Chelsea, marking another milestone for the attacking midfielder. The goal effectively settled the contest, although the hosts continued to threaten as the match progressed.

United continued to search for a way back into the game despite falling two goals behind.

Mbeumo came close to providing a consolation goal during stoppage time when his powerful effort from outside the penalty area struck the crossbar after Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders got a touch to the ball.

It was another painful moment for the visitors, who had created enough opportunities to make the contest more competitive but were unable to convert their chances.

Chelsea also had a goal ruled out for offside after Brazilian youngster Estevao Willian found the net in the second half. However, the hosts had already done enough to secure all three points.

The result provided Chelsea with a welcome return to winning ways after disappointing defeats in the Premier League and Carabao Cup, while United were left to reflect on another difficult performance.

The defeat increased the pressure on Carrick, whose side entered the match looking to respond to a 3-0 loss to Bournemouth the previous weekend.

United’s inability to turn promising attacking play into goals has become a major concern, particularly as missed opportunities continue to undermine their performances.

According to Reuters, Saturday’s defeat extended United’s winless run in all competitions to nine matches, further intensifying questions about Carrick’s position as manager.
