Former Premier League referee Mike Dean has criticised the decision not to send off Morgan Rogers during Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Everton, backing manager David Moyes’ complaints about the officiating.
According to a report by Football London on Sunday, 18 October 2026, Dean believes Rogers should have received a straight red card for his challenge on James Garner during Saturday’s Premier League encounter at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Chelsea secured all three points through Pedro Neto, who scored in the 46th and 90th minutes to hand Everton their first defeat of the league campaign.
However, the result was accompanied by controversy over several refereeing decisions, with Moyes questioning the yellow card shown to Everton midfielder Harrison Armstrong for his challenge on Josh Acheampong.
The Everton manager also argued that Rogers should have received a second yellow card for his tackle on Garner, which could have left Chelsea playing with 10 men.
Speaking after the match, Moyes said: "If our football in this country is not going to allow them then I don't know. We've got referees who we want to be the best in Europe, or think they're the best, because they let things go."
He added: "I thought it looked a half-decent tackle. Maybe somebody might tell me I'm wrong or tell me differently, but I wasn't sure that it was the right decision."
Moyes continued: "I was disappointed with the decision at the time. I had a wee look at the Morgan Rogers tackle on Jimmy [Garner], which, maybe some might have said something different, and I think that might have made a second yellow, it wasn't the case."
Dean, speaking as a pundit on Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday, offered an even stronger assessment of Rogers’ challenge.
"I think it's a minimum yellow. I called red straight away," he said.
Explaining his position, the former referee said Rogers failed to win the ball and made contact with Garner near the inside of his knee.
"When you see the angle we've seen now, he doesn't get the ball, Rogers. He might've just flicked it, but he catches him with his stud just on the inside of Garner's knee," Dean said.
"I think it's a straight red me, I really do. I just think it's not a good tackle at all."
