According to a report by The Punch on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Michael Carrick’s future as Manchester United manager is hanging in the balance following a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday.
The loss at Stamford Bridge has increased the pressure on the former United midfielder, whose team remains dangerously close to the relegation zone after another disappointing performance.
United entered the encounter hoping to bounce back from last weekend’s 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth. However, despite creating several opportunities in the first half, Carrick’s men failed to make their chances count.
Captain Bruno Fernandes, recalled to the starting lineup after being dropped last weekend, missed a promising opportunity when he fired Bryan Mbeumo’s cross over the bar.
Mbeumo later failed to connect with Fernandes’s delivery, while Amad Diallo was denied twice by Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders.
United thought they had taken the lead when Matheus Cunha turned in Harry Maguire’s header, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
The visitors paid dearly for their missed chances after the break. Morgan Rogers opened the scoring in the 50th minute, driving through the United defence before lifting the ball over goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
Manchester United’s situation worsened when Lisandro Martinez received a second yellow card following a foul on Wesley Fofana. After a VAR review, the referee awarded Chelsea a penalty.
Cole Palmer converted the spot-kick despite Lammens getting a hand to the ball, sealing the hosts’ 2-0 victory.
Chelsea also had a third goal ruled out for offside, while their supporters taunted Carrick with chants calling for his dismissal.
The defeat leaves United winless in nine games and just one point above the relegation zone, putting Carrick under renewed scrutiny.
United’s hierarchy must now decide whether to retain him ahead of Tuesday’s crucial Champions League clash against Roma at Old Trafford. Another defeat could leave the club facing an embarrassing and costly early European exit.
With results continuing to disappoint, Carrick’s position appears increasingly uncertain.
