According to a report by Madrid Universal on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, Jose Mourinho’s future as Real Madrid manager could depend on the outcome of Sunday’s El Clasico against Barcelona, with Cesc Fabregas and Mikel Arteta reportedly emerging as potential candidates to replace him.
Despite guiding Real Madrid to nine victories in eleven matches since returning to the Santiago Bernabeu, Mourinho has reportedly struggled to convince some senior figures within the club’s hierarchy. Concerns remain about the team’s overall performances, even though the Portuguese coach has recorded encouraging results during the early stages of his second spell.
Mourinho has now passed the 100-day mark of his return to the Spanish giants. However, reports suggest that club president Florentino Perez is monitoring alternative managerial options as expectations continue to rise.
According to journalist Jorge Picon of Defensa Central, Perez is keeping track of possible replacements should the club decide to make a change. A defeat against Barcelona could intensify the pressure on Mourinho and raise further questions about his long-term position.
The concerns reportedly extend beyond results, with several officials seeking more convincing performances from the squad. Falling nine points behind Barcelona would reportedly be difficult for the Madrid leadership to accept, making Sunday’s encounter particularly important.
Mourinho returned to the Bernabeu in June after agreeing to a three-year contract. Dismissing him after such a short period would represent a significant decision, particularly because he is believed to retain the support of his players.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid are reportedly considering Arteta and Fabregas as possible long-term options. Arteta has strengthened his reputation through his work at Arsenal and recently secured a contract extension that keeps him at the club until 2030. That agreement could make any attempt to appoint him complicated.
Fabregas is also believed to be highly regarded by Real Madrid’s leadership. The former Spanish international has continued developing his managerial career at Como, where his current contract reportedly runs until 2028.
Former France manager Didier Deschamps has additionally been mentioned as a possible candidate. However, Real Madrid have not reportedly opened formal negotiations with any of the individuals being considered.
Replacing Mourinho at this stage would carry considerable risks, especially as the squad continues adapting to his tactical methods. Another managerial change could disrupt the team’s progress and undermine the stability needed to compete for major honours.
Nevertheless, Real Madrid’s expectations remain exceptionally high, placing Mourinho under pressure to deliver both victories and convincing performances. Sunday’s El Clasico could therefore become a defining moment in his tenure.
For now, Mourinho remains in charge, and the club is not expected to make an immediate decision. However, his performance against Barcelona could significantly influence how the hierarchy assesses his future at the Bernabeu.
