Barcelona teenager Xavi Espart is expected to start at right-back against Real Madrid on Sunday following his impressive display against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
According to a report by Barca Universal on Thursday, October 22, 2026, the 19-year-old has earned Hansi Flick's trust. AS journalist Javi Miguel reported that Espart could get the nod as Jules Kounde remains doubtful because of an ankle injury.
Espart impressed against PSG by helping to contain Khvicha Kvaratskhelia before scoring a goal. His performance has increased his chances of keeping the right-back position for Sunday's El Clasico.
The young defender has already caught Flick's attention with his performances at left-back, where he has competed with Joao Cancelo and Alejandro Balde. His display against PSG also showed that he can play on the opposite side and contribute to Barcelona's attack.
With Vinicius Junior suspended, Espart could face Yan Diomande against Real Madrid. His performance against Kvaratskhelia has reportedly strengthened Flick's confidence in his ability to handle the challenge.
Espart also played through physical discomfort against PSG. He had experienced quadriceps pain before the match and worked with a physiotherapist to manage the problem. He later suffered a heavy knock to his ankle during the game.
However, reports indicate that neither issue is expected to stop him from playing against Real Madrid at the Spotify Camp Nou.
Kounde's ankle sprain has opened the door for Espart to feature in Barcelona's starting lineup. Even if the French defender returns to the matchday squad, he is unlikely to start and could instead come on as a substitute.
Unless there are changes before the match, Barcelona could use the same defensive line that started against PSG. Espart and Cancelo would occupy the full-back positions, while Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin would partner in central defence.
Espart's performance in the Clasico could also influence Flick's defensive choices for the rest of the season if the teenager continues to impress against top-level opposition.
