According to a report by the London Evening Standard on Friday, October 16, 2026, Arsenal are eager to secure the Norwegian midfielder's future following his encouraging performances at the beginning of the 2026/27 season.
The 27-year-old remains a central figure in manager Mikel Arteta's plans, with the club reportedly satisfied with his recent contributions. Discussions between Arsenal and Odegaard's representatives are said to be progressing positively, with both parties optimistic about reaching an agreement without major difficulties.
Odegaard's current deal at the Emirates Stadium expires in the summer of 2028. However, the Gunners want to extend his contract well before that deadline to avoid uncertainty over the captain's long-term future.
The midfielder joined Arsenal from Real Madrid in 2021, initially arriving on loan before completing a permanent move reportedly worth around £30 million. Since then, he has developed into one of the club's most influential players, combining leadership with creativity and goalscoring ability.
He has made close to 250 appearances for Arsenal across all competitions, contributing 46 goals and 46 assists. Although fitness problems have affected parts of his recent seasons, his technical ability and importance to the team have remained significant.
There had previously been suggestions that Arsenal might consider selling the Norwegian to generate funds for other transfers. However, his recent performances and continued importance to the squad have reportedly changed that outlook, making a contract extension the club's preferred option.
Odegaard also strengthened his standing with impressive performances at the 2026 World Cup before returning to club football in encouraging form. He has already scored four goals in 10 appearances during the current campaign, further demonstrating his attacking contribution.
Arsenal are now focused on completing negotiations, and an announcement could follow in the coming weeks if discussions continue without complications. A new agreement would represent a major commitment to retaining one of the team's most experienced and influential players.
The reported move also reflects Arsenal's wider strategy of maintaining stability within the squad that won the league title last season. Following Arteta's own contract extension, securing Odegaard's future would be another important step in preserving the club's leadership structure and strengthening its ambitions for continued success at the Emirates Stadium.
